Hi everyone
So i have my small froglet with the missing leg (rana temporaria) after a brief encounter with my lawnmower.
He eats micro crickets everyday however I'm not sure if I'm over or under feeding him. Is there a reliable way of judging weight? How could I tell if he was skinny? His belly is nicely rounded and I can't see his bones? Is this enough.
any advice would be appreciated
thanks
Sorry about your Froglet.
As for weight. As you pointed out, a very easy way to tell if a frog is well fed, is if their bellies are rounded. Typically, when their bellies get this way, it's probably best to wait a day or sometimes two for them to digest it all, because some frogs will ignore the food anyway and some frogs will stuff themselves[although most realize when to stop].
If a frog was skinny, and it depends on the species I think, you would obviously see it. Their bodies are more slim and less hefty. Sometimes you can see a frogs bones jutting out in certain places, but at this point, you would want your frog to eat ASAP, because they don't normally hold fat reserves and would probably die without food soon.
Weight isn't so much an issue, unless it comes to obesity, which is not overly detrimental to your frog, but it's still something that should be avoided. They won't be able to hop properly for food and might not even chase food at all and would become lazy. Some species are prone to obesity, such as the White's Tree Frog or the Giant Marine Toad, so those ones would have to have a careful diet.
Smaller frogs aren't really at risk of obesity[such as dart frogs/ small tree frogs]. They can get quite heavy, but obesity isn't so much an issue for them.
So weight shouldn't be too much of an issue, unless they get too heavy to jump after their food, or even hop/walk where they want to go.
Hi,
Thanks for the advice.
Yeah, I think he's maybe a bit of a glutton. He's always happy to eat and his belly is pretty rounded and chubby so I might give him a day off or a reduced food day.
His leg is great after the lawn mower incident and he's just moved into a swish new tank with lots of swimming space etc so he's doing pretty good![]()
