Hello I would like all of you to meet my two new american toads Cookie-n-Cream. Here's some pictures![]()
Cream is the toad that is by the rock in all the pictures except for the second from last pic and cookie is the toad that is by the plant and water bowl. Also I have a video up on youtube but it was taken before I got the second frog and his name was Mr.Toady but still go check it out if you want. My youtube channel is emfroggy98.
I love Woodhouse Toads. Buy lots of worms!![]()
OK I will buy lots of worms and I'm glad i'm not the only one that loves these types of toads.![]()
I'm from Michigan originally. Our backyard flowerbeds were filled with them. Many disregard, thinking they are drab and ugly. Maybe from a distance, I agree...they have a cryptic coloration for camouflage. Purchase a Macro lens to show off their beautiful up-close patterns.
American Toad? Do you have species name? Or the region of MI you collected from? I never knew them as American...only as Woodhouse.
Bufo woodhousii
yea in my backyard they are always under our basket ball net. Also yea I think that are some what ugly too and I was going to get a leopard frog but then my parents said to just get toads from the backyard. So I did because I really wanted some sort of toad/frog. Also they can be funny because one of my toads tried to get a night crawler that I put in their cage and his tongue could not grab the worm and he kept on missing. So I think these toads will make a good pet for me for now.![]()
If you got em from your yard, be sure to release them well before fall. They need to hibernate in winter. You can try to hibernate them yourself, but is tricky. It's the same process used for Eastern Box Turtles in your area. Let me know if you need more details but I recommend release. Just grab more next Spring.![]()
Ok yea I don't think I'll be able to hibernate them because It's hard but I'll think about it and do some research. If I do let them go I can probably just buy a frog from the pet store and keep him till he dies. Then when he dies and it's spring I can go out and find some frogs.![]()
Use the winter months to grow a good habitat that will be ready for Spring.
It's for this reasoning that most amphibs used as pets are Tropical. No need to hibernate. Some uninformed people will force these animals to live through winter by maintaining temps. This has been proven detrimental to their mortality via kidney damage. (with box turtles and possibly frogs/toads)
yea I could make a good enclosure and have it ready for spring time and then get a new frog/toad. I'll just have to see when the time comes what to do because it all up to my parents.![]()
