Before I start I just want to say that I have a reptiglo for UVB. This is a thread for UVA...
I have been told from a few people that 50 +wattage is bad for frogs. I am assuming they mean the light intensity is bad for their eyes.
i have been told from a few people that 50+ wattage does not harm a frog at all.
Confusing, right?
started out with a 50 watt zoo med basking bulb to raise the temp in my 18X18X24 enclosure. substrate is 4 inches high.
My starting temp was 70-71 degrees (ambient temp of house on a cool day 72-75) ok...
The 50 watt raised it to 73-4 so I took back the bulb and got a 75 watt from a different brand, different type of bulb (r'zilla black night heat bulb).
The 75 watt raised it to 77-78 degrees. not bad, but not where I want it.
So that is when I went to 100 watt and that raised it to 85 degrees! winner winner chicken dinner! i dont know how the 100 watt made it jump from 78 to 85 but I am glad it did.
Ok so this is the type of bulb I have now. 100 watt R'Zilla Black night heat incandescent bulb. I set it up with a dimmer switch because my temps can possibly reach above 85 and just to be safe I turn it down a notch when it reaches the triple digits in my area.
Here is the product description from the maker: Ideal for tropical and desert habitats, the bulb provides ambient heat in which the photons emitted by the filament never escape the dark tint, heating the air inside the enclosure to create the warmth needed for a healthy reptile environment. The bulb is made from glass containing rare earth black phosphors, which simulates the moon’s natural glow for nocturnal viewing without disturbing the reptile’s day/night cycle.
I already know people are going to say use a UTH and cover the top with saran wrap! See, I have this blanket I made that is well designed to cover some of the tank but to also provide ventilation, which saran wrap cannot provide.
Here is my beef with tank heaters. The UTH may melt the styrofoam background I have in my enclosure (even when I put it on the side of the tank) and I have had a hard time with UTH warping within the year. (I do not like constantly hasseling by returning multiple heaters to the manufacturer).
So here is my ultimate question: what is my 100 watt black night heat bulb doing to harm my frog and what problems does this create?
