I bought this moss mat, because it's water only washable, the real stuff had a lot of chips and particles and I didn't want to risk getting something in her sore foot(re:sore looking toes). Nowhere does it say how often I need to take this out to clean it. Does anyone else use this type of substrate? How often do I break down the entire tank for cleaning? And do you know if I can use artificial plants from Kmart or do I need to buy the ones from the pet stores specifically for reptile and amphibians?
How often you need to break it down to clean will depend on how fast it is getting dirty. I would guess if you spot cleaned then once a month should do it.
Yes, you can use the fake plants but clean them well before putting them in and just check the fake plants for exposed wire to make sure there are no shape pointy pieces of metal. Some of these fake plants don't use the wire inside like the ones i picked up at the Dollar Tree for my crested gecko tank.
He is messy so I use fake with him so I can clean them weekly.

Thank you so much for clearing things up. This has all been such a crash course for me. I didn't have time to study up on things before I got a new pet. She was hurt so this is learn as I go. I thought maybe once a week . Once a month sounds much better. Thanks again 8-)
Just do routine pick up of visual droppings when your checking on the frog.
