Could someone please advise at what age/size is it appropriate to introduce pinkies into Treemone's (my Whites Tree Frog) diet?
Thank you!
I'd like to see your specific question addressed by a Whites keepers, but just wanted to give a quick $0.02 on feeder mice in general. I do not know what size is appropriate for your frog before a pinkie may be offered as a treat.
You would be better off feeding a varied diet of many invertabrates - roaches, crickets, silkworms, soldier grubs (phoenix worms/calci-worms), captive raised hornworms as staples, superworms, mealworms, waxworms and butterworms on occasion as treats. There are a number of insect options to choose from that will make for a better overall diet for your pet.
Frogs and most lizards are not built to handle mammalian tissue and fat content, and pinkie mice are quite difficult to digest and contain absolute gobs of fat. There is always the risk of impaction and with regular feeding, and disease such as fatty-liver disease, kidney disease, and cataracts are almost inevitable if fed in a routine manner. If you do choose to feed infant mice to your forg, be sure it is a rare treat = )
