During the second feeding of my FBT duo on Saturday; Blitzy grabbed little Dumpling by the rear leg and dragged her/him into the water, just happened once and all was fine the rest of the feeding.
But tonight only two days since last feeding, Blitzy grabbed little Dumpling by the HEAD, twice!!! I broke them up both times, and made sure they both got a good helping of crickets.
But I am a little worried for my little one.
There are marks on the back of Dumpling's head from where Blitzy grabbed her/him.
maybe possibly seperate them when feeding if this is only happening during feeding if it is happening even when your not feeding seperate them because he could think he/she is food
i would like to start off by saying im not too knowledgeable with this species so if im wrong i apologize.
i would seperate the frogs. frogs do eat other frogs in the wild.
if the marks are bad, you might be able to apply neosporin WITHOUT PAIN RELIVER. research that ahead of time since im not familiar with your species. or maybe someone else will chime up.
whats the size difference between the frogs? if the smaller one is getting bullied maybe wait til it gets bigger then try putting them together again.
I actually have the same issue with Cortana. She's the most active of all my FBTs but she's also an aggressive eater. Quite a few times she's gotten the Arbiter's head in her mouth during feeding. She's bitten at him a few times and jumped over and on top of Master Cheif. When I got Cortana it was easy to tell her apart from the others because of a strange yellow spot on her back. I soon noticed another yellow blotch on her left side. I was looking at the Red Eyed Tree Frog section of the forum and someone had posted a picture of their frogs scars. It looks to me like that's what cortana's yellow skin is. So as it turns out she's aggressive because she's been bullied.
What To Do: take the bullie out during feeding. Give the bullie it's fill while the others eat theirs. Feed at the same time each time you feed. Try to get them into a schedule. It's difficult to tell how. Uh land you have in your tank judging by the pics you have up. After a week or two of separate feeding, try gently nudging your FBTs onto the land facing separate directions before putting crickets in. Put some in front of each FBTS so they start out seeing "their own" food. I've done this with Cortana and The Arbiter and it's been working out well. Master Cheif is a camper and will wait for The Arbiter and Cortana's escapees.
Thankfully the marks have already faded out overnight, whew. I don't think he is trying to eat her, I get the impression this is some sort of domination thing. Dumpling is quite a bit smaller than Blitzy, but he only gets agressive during feeding all the rest of the time they are pals.
Thank you Josh, this sounds just like the problem I'm having. So it seems a bit of 'toad' conditioning is in order. I may have to reorganize my tank set up a little to allow for enough space to seperate them. Right now I have about 45% land but its all squished into the end of the 20L tank. So first I'll just start by seperating them during dinner.
Each time he grabbed her head she had a cricket sticking out of her mouth. It makes me wonder if he wasn't trying to get her to give up her food. Thankfully Dumpling seems to have suffered not long term ill affects, the pale marks have faded away over night.
