One question.
Could I feed the fbt wild insects I find in my pesticide free garden?
I would highly recomend buying the live food from the store because you probably can't find meal worms or phoenix worm's in your garden..well maybe if you found crickets but that would be a lot of work anyway. At petco they sell a combo pack of meal worms and waxworks for $5.99 I think. The combo pack comes with the food for the worms. A lot of people say that meal worms are bad for fire belly toads because of their head but if you crush it not to hard and not to soft then it will work just fine. If you have any more questions then let me know.![]()
Thnx again.
I have being reading a lot of books about fbt,
and the mayority say you can or have to put moss in the land area.
Is it true?
Also, can you give me a list of low light plants?
Thank you.
Does feeding them paprika make them more bright?
No, Paprika does not make Fire Belly Toads brighter. In all of my research I have not come across anything of making Fire Belly Toads brighter at all, The toads with darker colored skin are perfectly normal. Pet stores like Petco and Petsmart sell FBT that have light colored skin and dark colored skin.![]()
Here is the list
- Aspidistra elatior (Cast-iron Plant)
- Aspidistra elatior cv. Variegata (Variegated Cast-iron Plant)
- Swedish Ivy - Very Durable
- Nepthytis (arrowhead plant)
- Philodendrons - There are many varieties and most thrive in low light conditions
- Peperomia Plants - This is a whole family of small plants that do well in low light. Good examples are the Peperomia Prostata and Miniature Peperomia
- Pothos plants - are very hardy and pretty indestructible, they tend to grow a little big for terrariums though.
- Bromeliads - is a whole species of plants with many varieties. Many of them are very hardy, thrive in low light and stay small enough for a small terrarium.
- Pilea Plants - This is a species of shade loving plants that come in a variety of sizes many of them are small and hardy. Some good examples are the Pilea involucrata and PIlea Nummulariifolia (Creeping Charlie) Pilea Plants
- Cryptanthus Cryptanthus
- Pellionia - grows up to four inches in height, needs brightness but not direct sunlight
- Sinningia plants are often very good, thrive in low light, flower and are very small Micro-mini Sinningia (sinningia Puilla) - This is one of the worlds smallest flowering house plants. Others are the white sprite, Snowflake, Dollbaby and Tinkerbell Sinningia Plants
You are awesome Allyson!
Thnx for the replies.
One more for you (hope it doesnt annoy)
Theres so many sites and links that say different things, I dont know how many fbt you can put in a 10 gallon tank
Above they say 2 or 3, in some books 5 of them ''can live comfortably'', and in this link Frog Forum - Fire-Bellied Toad Care and Breeding - Bombina orientalis and relatives
it says 6.
I know how you feel, a while ago I was wondering the same thing. I asked a friend of mine, he is an amphibian expert and he said you can put up to 3 Fire Belly Toads in a 10 gallon tank, if you put 4 in the 10 gallon tank then it would be really crowded which would make them not happy. Also if you only put 1 fbt in a 10 gallon tank then the toad would get sad because Fire Belly Toads live in groups.![]()
as far as moss goes, I have sphagnum moss in mine and it's where I feed. I haven't had any problems. If they get some in their mouth, they pull it out
Hi Michael,
In reply to your last question, it's really a question of stress. I originally started with 6 toads in a 10 gal., which is suggested in the care guide listed on the Frog Forum. The toads may have been just fine since they all seemed to get along well. I made the decision to put them in a larger tank because I felt that it was tight on space, I built an environment in a 55 gal. Big upgrade! Some still hang together and others seem to like the extra space. It was a question of $$, Petco was having their tank sale and it bothered me that they were only in a 10 g. So in making me happy, my FBT's lucked out and moved out of an "apartment" and into a full size house.![]()
