I got my new frog home and set him up i need some more substrate and will get some tomorrow but so far he is happy and looks nice and healthy. but i had a few questions. 1 is it a boy (Teddy) or a girl (Tammy)? 2 can anyone guess an age he/she is about 2 inches long right now and the reptile store said they had him for about 4-5 weeks. 3 when i got him home i put him in his little home but when i looked at him i saw a LITTLE WHITE BUG crawling on him. should i be worried?

You've picked a good place to come and ask questions. There are a lot of good people here who will answer your questions. You should read the care sheet post. If it is a male you will see nuptial pads on the front feet. In addition, males will eventually croak. I have a couple right now that are croaking up a storm. Take a picture of the front feet. I like the Eco earth but it is very messy and little bugs can and will lay their eggs in it. I am currently using Sphagnum Moss but there are ups and downs to all substrates. Personally I like paper towels because you really get to see the frog's colors. Anyway good luck. I'm sure someone much more helpful then myself will respond to you.

Im not sure on this but i thought the nuptial pads are only seen in mature frogs, being only 2 inches i dont really think he is old enough to show them. i could be wrong though. Iv been reading care sheets all day but most of the time they don't agree with each other. knowing that the people on here seem to know what they are doing i thought i would just ask. thanks for taking the time to reply

If the frog is a male then it should get nuptial pads when it is around 4 inches

    1) There's no way to tell at this age whether it is male or female. It's way too small.

    2) I don't think there is really a way to tell of age unless you specifically know when it was hatched or morphed at what day (Not sure where you begin to count a frog's age...lol)

    3) Not sure what the "little white bug" could be, but I'd think about cleaning out its entire enclosure or changing the substrate to get rid of it just to make sure the bug isn't harmful.

Your frog is too young to specify whether it is male or female. Males do not get their nuptual pads until they reach sexual maturity which is anywhere from 8 months to a little over a year. Males will begin to call around 5.5 months of age and older. Females lack nuptual pads and do not call. Females also grow larger than males do. Age is hard to determine by the size of the frog because there are too many factors that effect their growth rate including gender.

Looks to be a nice C. Cranwelli.

The little white bug could be a mite. You have to be careful with mites getting in the tank as they can be harmful to your frog. Wrong one isn't bad, but if you notice more you must bathe your frog to drown any that may be on him/her and immediately clean the enclosure.

Hello & congrats on your new frog!

No way to tell it's age unless you know it's egg laid date. Size is not an indicator of age because you don't know what or how often it was fed and this is a crucial growing period for the frog. Offer it food nightly, it may not always eat, but offer anyway. We use nightcrawlers as a staple at this size, it provides the best nutrients in our opinion.
Nuptual pads will appear at around the age of 8 months or the size of 3 1/2" whichever comes first. Substrate is a matter of choice in the end. We use damp paper towels and/or coco fiber. The moss tends to be a health hazard if ingested. As for the little white bug, chances are it is a mite.......they happen quite often in the fiber and are usually harmless. If it is a springtail, it is fine....they clean waste and help avoid mold & fungus.

The reason not all the care sheets agree is because there is more than one method of keeping the frogs. You end up using common sense & a little bit from the sheets and do what fits best. As long as you keep the animal's best interest in mind, you will be good.

Feel free to ask any questions you have, plenty of folks here to help!

Toxxxickitten is right about age counting. Since we are counting "frog" age it should start after the tadpole metamorphose into a froglet. I believe that is the conventional way of age counting in frogs. Before that scientists use Gosner stage to "age" tadpoles.
