I don't think RETFs are as fragile as everyone thinks. I had a trio I kept in a very large deli cup with moss & eco-earth. You can sometimes see large deli-cups at reptile shows, that's what I used for them. I know that isn't an ideal set up at all, but it worked for me at the time. I kept them a few months this way, but eventually sold them for reasons I can't remember. They were healthy and happy. I don't know if any were male; I never heard anyone croak. But, as long as you keep them moist and feed them - I think anyone could keep them. I think they are the next on my list to obtain since I marked the Tomato Frog off now.
However, Green Tree Frogs are very hardy and would make a good first time frog. I have one named Kiwi, but he isn't very active in the day. He pretty much stays perched in his corner and sleeps all day. But, once his lights go off he is awake and ready to eat!
Whatever frog you choose to keep, just make you do lots of research and ask any questions you have, no matter how silly you think they are. It's better to be safe then sorry and you can never learn enough!
