Basking?

A couple of weeks ago in Snowdonia (Wales) on a very cold but sunny morning I came across this Bufo bufo lying out on the middle of a path fairly high up into the mountain. What was surprising was how much warmer he felt compared to the surrounding air.

I was wondering if this was a deliberate behaviour or chance.
