Thread: Possible Infection on Xenopus muelleri

Default Possible Infection on Xenopus muelleri

I came home after being out of town since Friday and found one of my frogs with a white mucus patch on his back. He is an 8 month old Xenopus muelleri with no previous injuries or illnesses, I've had him since October. I took him out to take some photos and added some stress coat while he was in the container. I'll move him to quarantine as soon as I get home, but right now I don't have interenet there so I'm at the library. I'll have to look at it again, but the patch looks like a mucus-y layer of opaque skin that needs to shed off. I'm thinking it's a bacterial infection, but I've never had a sick ACF before so I really don't know. The pH was 6.0 and the ammonia 0.5 (never trust your roommates to take care of your frogs, they must have way overfed them). Once I get the sick guy out, I'll do a 50% water change on the tank. Has anyone ever had a similar situation before? If I didn't know my frogs better, I would just guess that he is shedding. He ate very well today, but moving him around was definately stressful for him. I'm going to look into finding a vet, but I'm not too optimistic about finding one that does frogs... So any advice would be very helpful. I will try to get on the internet later tonight. The patch is on his lower back and appears to travel down his right leg a bit. If anyone was wondering, the frog is much better today. I had a real close look at the area it it looks like he may have scratched his back on something (don't know what). I found a LOT of pieces of shed skin clogging the filter intake and I think they are all from him. Since there were so many pieces, I think that the wound caused him to shed in patches as opposed to one piece like usual. I treated him with stress coat again last night. For now I'm leaving him with the others, I think he will just be more stressed by moving. It whitish color is gone and now it just looks like some mild superficial scratches. I found a vet that I will take him to if anything changes.
I vacuumed the tank and did a 50% water change. I also added an ammonia remover to the filter media (by aquaclear). The ammonia was back to 0 by this morning.
On a happy note, their big tank is ready to start cycling so they will be moving into that soon.
