A day ago I noticed babies crickets crawling around in my pixie and pacman frog tanks. I don't want to change the month old substrate as I clean it daily or as needed. IS there any other way to remove these pests or is it safe to leave them? I really don't want a swarm of hungry mm long crickets tasting my frogs. I started cutting of the females tube but I'm not even sure that actually prevents anything.
I'm not short on fresh substrate just want to prevent stressing my pacman the most since it took it a few weeks to eat and now it will tong feed and hunt just fine.
I've had a few baby crickets explosions in my Pacman tank. He didn't seem to care at all. I just scooped them out with substrate over a few days until they were all gone. The only thing I've found that prevents me from getting baby crickets is providing the crickets something to lay their eggs in, in their container. Since I started that I haven't had any babies in any of my tanks I used to get them in.
If you worried about the babies nibbling on the frog just shake some cricket food in a corner and they should eat that and leave your frog alone.
I have also had this happen. leave a carrot in the cage for the crix to eat. If you do not want them to survive dont give them any moisture at all in soil etc .
You could try a dry-ice method. Take out your frog(s) and put the dry-ice in the tank -- saran wrap it and the co2 will suffocate the crickets.![]()
Place a small glass round bottom bowl down into the substrate so the substrate is right to the top edge. The crickets seem to fall in and the bowl is too slippery for them to escape from.
