Does anyone know how to sex Northern Cricket frogs?
The males call while the females don't. The call is a high pitched, short, pebble-like call which is repeated at an increasing rate. The sound suggests pebbles being clicked together, much like a cricket, hence the name
None of the frogs are calling. I waslooking for a morphological difference. I did notice that many have adark or spotted patch on their chin. The frogs that have thatcoloration seem to be the smaller ones. So, maybe they could be males, younger frogs, or just a variation. I plan to look for breeding pads on the feet with a dissecting microscope. Any other suggestions would be welcome.
Darker throats are also an indicator of male frogs/toads, as is size. Females are usually bigger than males. How big are the frogs you have?
