    Hi all,

I purchased these two frogs today and the guy at the shop said they were "bright eyed tree frogs", and didn't have a scientific name.

I cannot find them in any of my books or on the net.

    Any ideas what species?

I am not entirely sure on the species, even though I primarily keep tropical tree frogs. To me, they look a lot like a species of African Reed Frog. You should email the pictures to a herpetologist at a local zoo or museum, and they may give you a better answer.

I am really leaning towards one from the glass frog family, they are beautiful. Nice purchase.

    I'm sure you're right , Don.
But the gold color above the eyes is tricky ?
Maybe it is a froglet coloring and change as they mature.

I'm no expert and do not own treefrogs, but I agree with Don. these very closely resemble Glass Frogs. the translucent skin gives it away.

    Guess it's a Boophis mandraka.
Malagasy frog, not often offered in the pet trade, at least around here they aren't.
Could be Boophis rappiodes as well, but i kind of miss the red speckles, can be the picture tho.
Boophis rappiodes is more likeable to find in the trade.

    Yes truely amazing frogs.
They seem to be in good health.

After looking again, i would go with rappiodes.
The color on top of the eyes is quit red,
i think once they settle you will see more spots on the back,
    could be yellow or red.
Maybe you can take some pics once they are a little settled.
    They will become even prettier

I love the contrast between the eye and skin color.

    Thanks for all the replies!

Wesley, I have been looking at at lot of Boophis' and the two you mentioned are the most similar of what I've found. My two have a beautiful bright blue ring around their iris' (which you can't see that well on the pictures), which Mandraka does not have. And I've noticed red patches appearing and disappearing on their backs! I think they must be Boophis rappiodes. But as Lynn said, their coluring/markings may change as they mature.

Don - Thanks, but no thanks, these babies aren't going anywhere

I will try and get some more pictures when I can. Thanks again.

    Yeah, positive about the rappiodes.
It's not a maturity thing tho.
They just change color from day and night and when in bad mood they turn somewhat "uglier"
Once setteld you should see the spots more and the red on top of the eyes will intensify.
It's right about the blue ring, see i didn't mention that.
2nd look i took i found the picture could be enlarged, that's when the rappiodes became more obvious
    Good luck with them.

May i ask, how do you keep them?

I've got them in a well ventilated terrarium, with a very low UV (I think it's 0.2) on in the day. The substrate is soil (reptile branded stuff), with moss on the top for them to hide in and aid humidity. They have a large (compared to them), but very shallow water bowl. I've put vines with fake plants wraped around across the whole terraium, for them to climb and hide. I'd like to upgarde them to a larger planted terrarium in a month or two. I'll take a photo of the set up soon.

I've been puting food in at night, as they are nocturnal and hunt at night and I have been lightly misting their enclosure a couple of times a day.

Do you think what I am doing is ok or do you have any suggestions? - I am trying to learn as much as I can about them, but information on them is scarce.

    Here are some more photos:
