I bought these plants at a reptile expo, however they were not labeled and I was wondering what they are so I know how to care for them. So far they seem to do best in low light and instead of the leaves growing upward, they seem to grow outward. Does anyone know what they are?
Gorgeous but I havnt really seen anything like it online
They're prayer plants. The leaves will fold upwards when the lights go out, like it's praying, then lay back down when they come back on. This isn't fast and it might not move much at all depending on the conditions.
The one on the left with the reddish purple lines is Maranta leuconeura massangeana, or the usual 'fish-bone' version. The other one should be some kind of Maranta leuconeura as well, but I don't know more. It's obviously not far off from the standard purply fishbone one, just not as colourful.
They can take fairly low light as you've noticed, are good with average water (not soggy, not dry), and can handle a fair bit of pruning. They'll also send out bloom stalks with teeny flowers on the end that are easy to miss. They have fairly tiny root systems so can work well in small pots in backgrounds if you like. They won't climb much unless supported artificially by something else.
Wow, that's great! Thank you so much Brian!
