Don't be discouraged if he doesn't take food directly from you; some of them never really do. Mine is the calmest thing ever when I have to handle her or rearrange stuff in the tank, but has never hand fed and only once in her life taken food from tongs.

If you're worried about him getting too much calcium, try putting only a tiny bit on the crickets (I think they may be able to smell it but idk).
