What size tank? They love the water, so be sure to provide some type of pond . They will change their colors a bit to match their environments, so if you like green, add some plants, and same for brown. They can vary from light to dark also in the same way.

They are playful and energetic when they are happy.

Any ideas of how you'd like their home to look?

    Looking good so far .

To be safe I would completely immerse the gravel under water so there is no accidental ingestion while eating. Or you could add more river rocks on top.

Same risk with the moss unfortunately. Do you like the look of Eco earth? It is safe for them even if swallowed.

A nice background will help relieve stress. Covering the back and sides at first helps make them feel secure until they settle in.

A great way to enhance your ideas is to scroll through the monthly photo competitions .

ok il get some more larger pebbles to cover the gravel ahh I read on a few sites/books that they like the moss to sort of bury into? I have a layer of moss over the gravel, then Eco earth, then the top later of moss that you can see.

The moss is fine so long as you don't feed them on it bc it can cause impaction if swallowed. They will burrow in Eco earth too, though firebellies don't burrow much. Glad you have a filter .

ok thanks well after what you've said and someone else on another forum, I think I'll remove the moss ! don't want to risk it ! better safe than sorry I guess ! I bought both the moss and the Eco earth so I have plenty of both. yeah I thought of keep a filter to help the water cleanliness along a bit. going to look at doing a waterfall feature in the near future !

    thanks for the advice
