Aye, the barley straw (the bales of hay) method works wonders for pond algae treatment. I used it time and time again back in my landscaper days. Just make sure you are using actual barley straw. timothy hay will actually promote algae growth.

Winyfrog, I would add that increasing the number of plants that prevent sunlight from reaching the water (like water lilies) will help reduce algae as well. Here's a blog post that has some more tips.
