Basking lamps: How do I prevent burns?

Hello there!

Now I know this seems like a silly question, but I am getting my very first froggy who requires a basking lamp. I've researched which bulbs to use etc, and the forum has been a brilliant help. However I've not been able to find an answer for what I would have thought was a simple question.

How do I stop my tree frogs from burning themselves on the basking lamp?

Now I've seen many suggest cages around the lamp, which would be great! But if I place a metal cage around the lamp, won't the metal heat up too and still pose a burns risk? The quarantine cage he will be staying in looks like so:

Now the top is a metal mesh and light could be shone through the mesh, however I am concerned he will climb up onto the roof and hurt himself. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of levels for him to sit, logs and leaf protection. But I am worried that he will climb up to the mesh and burn himself.

This question also applies to my largest tank, I want to place some heating in for Bubba and Thrall, as Bubba loves to sit in the window of a morning and catch the few stray beams of light that filter through his tank. I just wanted to give him a bit more of a chance to really enjoy himself for just a few hours of the day.

Hi,
I am wondering what frog that you are getting that would require a basking lamp.

Since humidity and places to soak are usually an important part of a frogs live, the basking lamp would dry the tank out way to fast to be healthy for most frogs. Usually a good compact florescent is more that enough for frogs active in the daytime like dart frogs.

I agree with Don.

A actual heat lamp is only required if and I do mean IF you can't reach the correct temp level in your frogs enclosure. If you need a heat source that won't remove a lot of humidity get a UTH(Under Tank Heater) and place it on the side of the tank. Or purchase a basking lamp and instead of a basking light bulb purchase a low wattage ceramic heat emitter. Otherwise the small compact fluorescent bulb is the wat to go.

Sorry, I didnt mean a basking lamp exactly, just a heat lamp to give them something to heat themselves up under when its very cold here and allowing them to move further down.
