plants in coconut husk?

could i put live plants in coconut husk and will it survive and get held in place or is there a different substrate i need

Are you using coco fiber such as Eco-Earth or are you using coco husk chunks?

I highly recommend using the fiber version of Eco-earth or even Zilla's Plantation Soil which you can plant directly into as long as you have a drainage layer.
If your planting bromeliads then I would attach to something such as driftwood, placed into a piece of cork round or stuck into the background so the base of the plant does not rot quickly.
Coco husk chunks won't work supporting plants and are usually a swallowing hazard to most frogs.

It would the fiber and by drainage layer do you just mean a layer of rocks

Yes. You would need to have an area below the substrate to allow the water to drain off and not cause the soil to be saturated and rot the roots of the plants. Usually hydroballs, or a layer or gravel/stones, or a false bottom made with eggcrate is used. The layers are separated with substrate screen or window screen material to keep the layers from getting mixed together.

for my american toads i just put about 1 1/2 inches of rocks down then 3 inches of dirt on top would that basically be good enough except i would put coco fiber

It would work just fine but put a sheet of screen material separating the coco fiber and stone.

What I do is I just keep the plants in a small pot and then cover it up with the eco earth so you can't see the pots. Looks nice and they can't get uprooted.
