Hi all,
I was directed from a member of another forum as i'm having problems feeding my baby horned frogs and was hoping maybe someone on here could help me. The froglets I have are ones I have bred myself and i've tried breeding these twice and both times i've had problems feeding the babies once they metamorphosise into froglets. The first time I was only left with a few froglets that did show a feeding response, it seems the same this time with only a couple showing feeding responses and if they miss the food they seem to give up. They have been out of the water for a few days and it may seem like i'm worrying to much about this but the froglets are starting to get very skinny and I think it may be a repeat of last time. Food has been left in over night hoping that the problem was maybe too much disturbance but not one has eaten anything yet, i've tried baby roaches, worms, small crickets and only two have attempted to eat. There being kept in cricket tubs, 26c with damp paper towel until they get a bit bigger, I tried keeping them on a coco fibre substrate the first time I had froglets but none ate then so I was hoping with just paper towel they would maybe catch the food but is there anyone that could maybe advise me on how I could get them to start eating?
Thanks
I unfortunately have no experience with frogs that young. But if I were you I'd try the pacman food that samurai reptiles sells. It's really good for the frogs and most seem to like eating it. I hope u get it figured out soon and get some size on those little babies. Good luck.
If they are showing no sign of wanting to eat you might have to forcefeed them a few times to build up there energy. What were you feeding them as tadpoles?
Thanks for the replies everyoneI just sent you a pm Mike because I didn't realise you would reply so quickly, but as tadpoles they have been eating tubifex, blood worm, black worm, white worm. I fed them as much as they could eat each day and the tadpoles seemed very healthy, especially compared to the last time I tried rearing the tadpoles. This is the only problem I have come across so far with the babies.
Thanks
Try properly sized bits of nightcrawlers. Once our froglets are on land, we give them 3 days or so to fully absorb the nutrients from their tails and then we offer foods. We have not had to force feed froglets that young since our first attempts at breeding years ago because they all seem very aggressive in their feeding responses now. I have a theory..... we have found that each spawning over the years has produced healthier tadpoles & froglets as we tweak key husbandry points.
I say offer them a variety of food and make sure whatever it is, that it is the proper size. I know these frogs are like the Pitbulls of the frog world, but they do have limits as to how big food items should be. We start with the worms because the legs on the crickets & roaches seem to freak them out as froglets.
Good Luck!
Thankyou for the advice, if I have to force feed how do I do it? Because I don't want to injure them, but also is it normal for the frogs to look skinny after coming out of the water? They don't look at all fat, their body is less wider than their mouth on most of them and i'm keeping them on paper towels because I thought they'd possibly get their food easier. Another thing is where the tails being absorbed is it normal for the stump to go a brownish colour? Sorry about all the questions but want to try everything I can to get these eating.
Thanks
I sent you a message back
