They don't get quite as hot as people think they do. A lot of them are designed to prevent burning of your pets. This is the safest way to place it on your tank. You can buy a second UTH and place it on the same side as the other and have 2 of them running to assist with the heat Like Heatheranne does. Sometimes it is best to use an incandescent bulb though if you cannot achieve the correct temp.

The incandescent bulb seems to be helping a bit. The tank is almost up to 80 degrees now. He can't be too cold though because he's not even on the warm side of the tank right now.
