Aquafer question,

I was wondering if I have an aquafer in my Viv will I have to change the water in the bottom of the Viv even though its flowing and filtering through Hydroball? If so will partial changes by allowing the pump to circulate the water out into a bowl and then replacing the water that was removed with new be sufficient without disassembling the Viv?

i would think even with filtration, you would periodically want to change the water just like you would with a fish tank to remove amonia and other buildup like nitrates and what not. You only change out a portion of the water though not all of it. With water in the hydroton level you will get beneficial bacteria buildup that will work on some of the chemical build up but you still need to remove some of it through water change. Don't take my words on it, but it just seems logically to me.

There is a fantastic product for aquarium users called Easy Balance. Reduces the need for water changes. Also, there should be enough natural evaporation which requires you to add extra water right? I'm planning on putting a torched PVC pipe (with wide notches at the bottom ) behind my background so I can siphon it if I need to. Torched PVC looks awesome if done right too! I use it in all my tree boa cages.

I was worried I would have to tear down the Viv and clean it all out. I guess its a good thing that I made the Viv able to be disassembled easily. I really appreciate the advice. Maybe I should have had the tank drilled for a drain to make it eaier to remove some of the water, but the little pump I have in there can run in less than a cm of water and can run dry for 30 minutes before any damage can occur to the pump. Thanks again
