as I have stated I am not new to reptiles so I have alot of stuff lying around, supplies are not a problem. I keep looking at sites on whites dumpy and pac man/ pixie frogs. Some say they need uvb others say no. Some say they need an external heat source others say no.

can i get the specs needed + company name and wattage of the light suggested? its the biggest player in getting a frog. I have everything, but i have dragons and the electric bill is crazy. I loved my pixie frog ( earl ) but i was new to reptiles and knew nothing so i had no heat on him. he was fine, a voracious and scary eater. but i want to do it right this time.

White's Tree Frog - UVB isn't needed but I use a low wattage exo terra dayglow bulb and a heat mat on the side of the tank.

I'm guessing it gets pretty cold in Maine so an extra heat source in the colder months maybe - I had two heatmats on the go this winter. -5c outside and you've got iguanas and tree frogs to warm - can be a real pain.

Sorry, I just saw this thread. Don't fret.

UVB is not needed for frogs. Although they do benifit from 4 to 6 hours a day. Since as you know UVB radiation is used by the body to produce Vitamin D3 which mtabolizes calcium into the bones. All UVB lights are fluorescent and are usually too bright for frogs and not only this, but can actually cause blindness in some. Albino Pacman frogs are. One of the main frogs that can become blind due to these lights.

Heat lights should be incandescent or infrared. Usually the rule of thumb is no more than 50 watts and no less than 25. A heat light is only needed if you cannot gain the temps you need from your external heat source(UTH Under Tank Heater) which should be placed on the side of the tank for burrowing species and depending on how your setup is even for tree frogs.

You should always have a constant heat source so that you can maintain the temps needed for your frogs. Especially for tropical and subtropical species.

When using a heat lamp it needs to be one that has a dimmer switch. Fluker's 5.5" dome with dimmer is a good one to use. The dimmer allows you to control the amount of heat and light produced by your incandescent heat. Bulb. There are many bulbs to choose from so as long as you stay in the wattage range you should be fine. No basking bulbs for Albinos though. To bright. You must use infrared with them.

i may be wrong but doesn't glass block UVB anyway, so if you use a glass top where the light will be the UVB wont get through the glass (thought i read this somewhere but i could be wrong).

But as stated, you need to be able to maintain the proper heat requirements for any animal, how you go about it is what you have to figure out depending on your situation, how much heat you need etc. Heat mats are popular for putting on the side of the tank. I can pretty much maintain the heat level i need for my tank with a combination of the house temperature, my CFL bulb, and my heat mat.

I believe it can pass through glass otherwise it would not be able to be emitted from the bulb since the bulb itself is glass? Just a thaught. I haven't heard whether that before, but its quite possible since certain types of radiation don't pass through certain materials so this is possible. Most people do not have a glass lid though. I honestly would like to have one.
