Please help! My White's has not been eating lately and I didn't think too much of it because Pickles goes through phases like that, however I noticed that she was starting to look skinny so I weighed her. She was 33 grams the end of January and is now 22.4 grams. At the end of January I treated her for parasites with Panacur that was given to me from my herp vet. One dose 3 days in a row and then another three days in a row about 14 days later. Pickles was fine the first few weeks after that, eating well and gaining weight and then suddenly it was all downhill. I was planning on calling the vet tomorrow anyways, but I got home and Pickles is a dark forest green with brighter green spots. (My frog Brownie, that died 2 years ago got the same coloring the night before he died). I have force fed pickles a few times throughout the ordeal. Sometimes she would eat the cricket and others she would spit it out. Tonight I tried to force feed again and the inside of her mouth was all green. I'm pretty sure I read something somewhere about that being bad, but I can't find it. Pickels has also slowed down the past ocuple nights. Not lethargic, just not as active. I gave Pickles a honey bath and and tonight it put a little sparkle back in her eyes, but not nearly enough. Please help, I'm panicked! I don't think she'll make it through the night.
Quick facts:
Age: 2 years 7 months
Day temp: 80F
Night Temp: 70F
Humidity: 50-60%
Tank: 18x18x24 (only frog in tank)
Tank cleaned thoroughly every other week, spot cleaned daily
I'm sorry to hear about that
I don't really know anything about what to do, but another member has had the same sort of thing recently. Maybe look at his thread http://www.frogforum.net/tree-frogs/...st-lately.html
also, maybe if you put a picture up of him other members might find it easier to say whats wrong.
I hope you find out, good luck![]()
That would be me. Those light green spots really irk me... I haven't found a definite answer on them, closest I have gotten is stress related. My little girl still has a few but not as bad as before. I have been trying to leave her be for the most part with weekly pedialyte baths and she actually started to pick off a cricket every so often, but still not the "big eater" that I keep reading White's are. I located a herp vet near by that's apparently the best in town, I just may have to bring her in there to see if there are other factors other than stress. That is about all I can input at this time. I hope we figure this out![]()
I picked up some Pedialyte today and I'm going to try that. I did a honey bath last night because it was all I had. I called the vet and she has an appointment Friday morning. I'm doing the best I can to keep the humidity extra high and I have a UVB light on the tank. I know it's debatable as to whether or not they need it, but some extra vitamins can't hurt at this point, especially since she's not eating. Pickles' color is a bit better today, but not by much (it's good enough that there is nothing visibly wrong, just that she is brown). It may sound silly, but perhaps she is having anxiety because her male companion died January 8th (from a respiratory infection cause by a bad decoration that is long gone). I'll let know both know how it goes on Friday. Thank you for your replies. Good luck to you too Omar.
So I took Pickles to the vet Friday and the vet really couldn't tell me anything conclusively. Pickles was down to 18 grams (from 33g originally), he took an x-ray and said her bones look great, but there were some gas type bubbles in her stomach/intestinal track. He gave me Baytril to treat her with twice daily, A/D food that is high in protein to force feed her and an IV solution to soak her in twice daily that is more balanced for a frog than Pedialyte. I begun the course of treatment immediately and just after midnight Saturday morning Pickles died. I'm heart broken. Since the vet saw gas, my guess would be that when I treated Pickles in January/February for parasites (under the vets' supervision), some of the parasites died too far up in her intestine and she wasn't able to pass them, putting her into septic shock. Which makes me feel worse. Sigh.... I'm sure going to miss the little bugger.
Geez, I'm sorry to hear this. I have not posted in my thread yet but I found my little girl this morning in her water dish not responsive. I wasn't able to drop money on a vet visit and I feel like crud about it. I did notice when she died in the water dish, that green spotting looked to be way worse, all on her legs and back. She started showing issues about a week after getting her so I'm just going to chalk it up to the breeders that sold her to me (at an expo). I will be trying white's again though, this isn't going to stop me. I'm going to try to find a healthy baby, or even a pair of babies somewhere and start over again. Don't be discouraged, you did everything you could. Hope you feel better.
Oh no I'm sorry to hear this (for both of you)
Jen I hope your okayIm so sorry to here about pickles.
Omar don't feel bad about it, you did the best you could and you obviously loved her very much. I'm sure your next whites will live a long and happy life![]()
I'm sorry to hear about your Pickles
The bright green spots are sometimes refered to as "the neon green spots of doom". Basically it's a sign of an infection with the frog; usually bacterial. Occasionally these spots are nothing to worry about and will go away the next day, but usually it's a sign that the frog is sick.
If this ever happens to you again, you will want to lower the humidity, not raise it. Tree frogs are suceptable to bacterial infections and a higher humidity can cuase them to get sick.
Thank you all.
Omar, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss too. We love the little guys and I'm sure you did everything you could too. Good luck with the next White's, I'm sure she will do much better.
Sandy, that is good to know it's a sign of a bacterial infection and it's interesting that the humidity should be lowered. I didn't know that and of course tried to get it up. Certainly good to know for the future.
