A friend of mine found a Gray Tree Frog, a bit bigger than a quarter, and dropped it off at my house saying it was injured. I put it in a cage with some soil I dug up outside (wild caught individual) and I also put a water dish (a glass ashtray actually) in the cage with water and left the frog be. About an hour ago I went out and got 2 branches that had green leaves on it and a stick, I put those in the cage and I turned the heat lamp that was on off. When I returned to the room the frog is in he was no longer huddled up against the top corner, near the top of the cage, he was down at the bottom of the cage in the soil, just sitting there. He hops around fine and climbs fine. I have 6 small crickets in the cage with him. Besides the cage set up is there anything else I should do to ensure he'll be happy? Does he require a heat lamp?
I used an under tank heater for my gray and she was perfectly content with it but if you already have a heat lamp then that would probably sufice. I'd get a thermometer and a hydrometer to be sure the temps and humidity are at the right levels. I usually mist several times a day, at least 2 (morning and night) but more often then not 3 or 4 times. I'd keep a careful eye on him with the wild branches and soil just because things treated with pesticides and fertilizer can still be harmful even to a wild frog.
And I'm assuming since your sig shows you are very experienced that your using de-chlorinated or spring water in the dish and misting.
If you haven't seen it already, there's a great care sheet on this site by John Frog Forum - Gray Tree Frog Care and Breeding
What is the injury?
More climbing spots and more plant cover would be my suggestion. A heat lamp isn't necessary, room temperature is fine unless your place is particularly cold. I use a plain old incandescent bulb at the top in the winter (my place is cold in the winter!) with lots of perches at various heights so they can go where they're comfortable, but in the summer it's back to more energy efficient fluorescent bulbs.
I just got through reading that, I'm not sure what the injury is. The frog hops around fine and gets around fine. At this time I'm wondering if its even injured at all, if my friend just caught it and tried to take care of it himself but found himself not able. I am using Bottle Spring Water, I use that even with my lizards.
