    Talking New Pacman frog!

Hi All! I got a new pacman frog last night from Petsmart. It was well started and around 3" snout to end. It's eating well already (I got it started on some large supers which I also have for my bearded dragon, Darwin), and I plan on getting it on a staple of earthworms. I do have a question though: how many should I be feeding it at this point? I don't know how old it is, but the guy at Petsmart told me he had been there "a while", I'm guessing for at least a couple of months. It's not yet fully grown is it?

It's mostly brown, except for a very neat arrow pattern on its back that extends out along the side and down the snout. I can't seem to get my camera to capture the vividness of the green, but it's really awesome. Can anyone tell the specific species from that pic to satisfy my curiosity? Thanks in advance!

it's a Ceratophrys Cranwelli. I'd stay away from the supers tho! they can cause serious injury by impacting your frog so he can't poop. the exoskeleton on them can bind up in the tummy of your frog! It's def not full grown yet. I'd feed it earth worms a few times a week. those are great for them. just make sure the worms are from a safe place. not the wild and not just for fishing

Thanks for your reply! Why should I not use bait worms? The care sheet on this site specifically mentioned that one could get earthworms from baitshops as long as they were chemical/scent free.

that's the only reason, just as a rule bait shops use worms that were brought to the surface w chemicals or they have been scented. so if you can find out from the supplier that they are chemical free then they are fine. but it's dangers to just assume. I buy from Werners Wigglers up here in Washigton. No problem we are here to help!

I've seen bait worms from Walmart before, and it seems that they were recommended a while back by someone on this forum. I'll double check the packaging to make sure that it's chemical free. I have some leftover dubia from my bearded dragon, although I'm not sure if the pacman frog likes it much...he bit into it, spit it out while still keeping it in his mouth, pulled it back into his mouth, etc. and repeated a few times before (hopefully) swallowing it. Normal? Stop feeding dubia?

that's pretty normal, because petsmart feeds strictly crickets (w no vitamins I'm SURE) and that's an easy meal. so Dubias are shocking to him I'm sure but very healthy! keep trying. I feed Dubias all the time but your right sometimes they seem like they are too pokey for the frogs but they are good for em and they won't hurt em. Iv heard Walmart worms are fine but I can't find out 100% if they are so I stay away.

Lol I can see the pokey thing. I wish now I had kept my colony but a certain picky dragon refused them after brumation. I might order some more from my supplier if the Walmart worms don't work out. Thanks for your help! Also, judging on size, can you give me an approximate age?

not really just because females and males differ so much and we dont know if yours is male or female and also he could unusually small for his age because Petsmart will sprinkle a few crickets in there at feeding time just as they would for a 1 inch green tree. so if I guess the age I might as well go ahead and guess your hair color judging from this thread! lol hahahahahahahahahaha. so I'm gona guess and say 3-4 months. who knows tho

Lol I can see where you're coming from. I do know that the employees of the store enjoyed watching him eat, as everyone I spoke to was familiar with the way and amount he was eating (something about him biting one of the employees as they were feeding him a goldfish, I know bad I don't plan on doing it). I guess I'll just cut back on feeders for him if I notice him getting too pudgy. Thanks so much!

Bobby is all about the Green Scene when it come to his frogs. So of course he would think that I will say he doesnnt like your Pac. Bobby likes my Large brown female so he does like browns, but he says he doesn't want to own one. Shhhh he doesn't know yet, but he is slowly converting to the brown side Lol! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.........HA!

Lol you two are odd. I think I'm just attracted to the natural look of animals. My bearded dragon is a normal type as well. I had originally wanted an albino, but this guy fits right in with me (in that he's not picky about what he eats and is settling in nicely with minimal relocation stress!). I just need to decide on a name now.

Odd? Noway we just enjoy to occationally pick on each other. All in good fun. I also have a Chacoan Horned frog like yours. She is a little over a year old now and is 4.25" SVL(snout to vent length) if I had to guess the age of yours I would say if Male 5 months and if female 4 months. Males and female growth rates differ and their full size. Males tend to be 3" to 3.5", but it isn't uncommon to have a male reach 4". Females usually reach 4.25" to 5.5". This all depends on the frog and how much food and nutrition the frog received at crutial growing stages of his/her life. For now only time will tell if you have a male or female.

Males will start calling anywhere from 5 months of age to a year. When they reach sexual maturity at 8 months to a year they will develope what is called nuptual pads on each thumb which is used to hold on to the female during Amplexus. The nuptual pads will look like a dark spot kind of like a mole. Females are quiet and lack nuptual pads. Also males that have been calling will have dark colored throats.

Welcome to the Brown Team Lol!

He is one of the best looking Fantacies that I've seen. I really like Johnny888's too. You should name him Fanty Pac. Lol!
