Red eye acting weird(sick?)

This could also be a neurolgical problem due to a lack of a vitamin. Do you dust with a multivitamin?

i will go buy some UNFLAVORED PEDIALYTE when i get home from work and soak him.also i dont dust with multivitamin but i do feed my crickets a variety of mostly vegies and sometimes fruit.and also do change the water dish every day or two

ok i tried to soak him in the 1 to 10 Pedialyte water but he keeps looking down and i was afraid he was going to drown and also he was spazing out and jumping and going on his back and he was trying to flip back over but couldn't and did that a few times,so that did go so well.and also i saw that one of his pupil is more dialated than the other pupil on the other eye,he has had this since hes been acting weird or maybe even before,also does his size seem small to you guys for a 8 month old Red-Eyed Leaf Frog?i always thought that he was male because my other Red-Eyed Leaf Frog is bigger and think that one is female.and here is a pic of him,will post more pics if u guys need

Hi Griffin,
Although I have red eye tree frogs, I am not an expert.
However, here are my thoughts.
He is thin, and looks weak. I am glad that you were able to do the soak.
PM Grif and ask how often you can do that?
It is stressful for them to be handled , though!

If this were my frog, this is what I would do for now :
-I would keep him in a hospital tank to monitor things closely. ( 5-10 gallon glass tank $ 10 )
-get what ever is needed, ( lights heat etc to keep this separate tank)
-paper towels substrate.
-add a pothos vine or a plant he can climb on and hide in
- cover the back and sides of the tank with dark paper.
-keep him in as quiet a spot as possible
-dampened the towel w/ declorinated water ( change it 3 times /week ONLY while he is sleeping)
-include a VERY shallow / soaking dish w/ the same water that the paper towel is dampened with ( change it daily ONLY while he is sleeping)
-*****Keep the temp and humidity w/in the parameters recommended ******
-keep a very consistent day/night light cycle
-dust crickets ( small ONLY- make dinner an easy catch ) with vit D and calicium **** DAILY****
-put several crickets in - every night ( count them !!!)
-remove ALL uneaten crickets in the morning ( after he goes back to sleep ) put them back in the cricket bin to feed
-Light - I would hang 2.0 UVB bulb near-by during the day ( maybe 6 hours /daily)

You nee to do as Lynn has stated above. Keepthe climate very consistant with minimal fluxuation. Feeding your crickets with fruits and veggies does help, but most of the time is not enough. This is why you should supply supplemnts by dusting their. Food. It adds extra benifits.

Your frog is in very bad shape. I suspect parasites may be attacking your frog due to how emaciated he is. A vet trip is needed ASAP and I would provide a fecal sample to take with you for testing.

Still perform the Pedialyte soaks. Make sure they are warm not hot. Luke warm is safest. Around 72 to 77 degree water. He needs to be in the bath for minimum of 10 minutes per soak and you can perform this daily for up to 2 weeks.

I am no expert and do not own Red Eyes, but I can honestly say that your frog is in a lot of trouble right now. If you have to you can support your frog in the bath. Just be careful not to harm him or allow him to harm himself.

Also while soaking your frog you will want to shoot for the 20 minute range, no less than 10 minutes in the soak otherwise its benifits will be wasted. New fresh soak everytime. If doesn't eat within the next day you will need to force feed him.
Try red wigglers and pieces of earthworm. They afe nutritious and easily digested.

Just wanted to ask. How long ago did you get your calcium dust and from what store did you get it? Not too long ago I got a small container of fluckers +D3 from my petsmart and my gray acted similar to what you have been saying. It turned out that the shipment of fluckers that my store got had been tampered with. Helen was fairly ok within a few days but she is also a different species as well as wild caught so possibly not as susceptible to the containment as a red eyes or your bottle may have had a more concentrated amount of the containment (still dont know what it was).

Personally, if your still dusting I would either stop all together or get a different container (preferably a different brand). If your still dusting from the same container it could account for the prolonged and acute illness.

Fluckers is a great brand but the recent batch has been contaminated. I would stop using it for the time being and tell the store where you got it about the issue. They may want to take the batch off the shelves just in case (like my petsmart did).


I'll admit I have no experience with red eyes but this just sounds too much like what my Helly went threw to be a coincidence.

Looking at the new pics I am also sorry to say that his only chance is to see a vet that specializes in Herps. The soaks will only provide nutrients and electrolytes. He may need additional meds to recover and the ones he will need you can't buy from a store. I like Heathers idea of the Paper towels soaked in the Pedialyte bath solution. He probably doesn't lookas emasiated from absorbing some of the Pedialyte solution.

At this point his only chance for survival is a vet. I really wish there was more that I could do and that everyone else here could do. He is in really bad shape Griffin. I am sorry.

I'm so sorry you're having such a tuf time.
I would say the visit would be about $40-50, maybe less.
I wish you had a choice
A herp vet will know what to do !!!!!
Please let us know how you make out.

Ask the vet for a 3cc syringe ( w/out a needle). The little end of a syringe ( where the needle would twist on and off )is the perfect size to fit into his mouth, and that size syringe is not so small in diameter that you risk putting it in too far. You can then, pull the legs off the crickets, squish the cricket, mix w/ the vits and calcium and push a tiny bit it into his mouth with the end of the syringe? See what the vet thinks about this idea. In fact , I know it works well, I have done it. You just have to make sure the frog is alert enough to swallow ( so he does not choke on the food)

Or, at the very lest, pull the cricket's legs off first.
The cricket will be easier to swallow w/out the legs.
Maybe w/out the legs, he will not spit it out.
