I noticed my whites had not moved from the same spot for a few days, so I took her out to feed in a separate container. There were four crickets in there and she didn't go for any of them. I held her in my hand and she has no energy left, no grasping reflex at all and she hardly lifts her back legs to put them under her. There was nothing to her belly, so i feared she hadn't eaten enough. Her skin was very splotchy, not at all the light green she usually exhibits. I tried force feeding her a cricket, but when i came back in an hour, she had turned a horrible color and the cricket was still in the back of her throat. I removed it and now I'm back to square one. She also has a small lesion on one of her back legs. I just went through a big process with the vet getting rid of her parasites, which we did, and I don't have any money for a visit to the vet. Can any one help?
doesn't sound very well... and I've heard similar stories which ended often badly =( and I've also heard that it wasn't that good to remove parasites because for some white's it's too much of a procedure. or maybe not all parasites have been removed? I would not force feed her again. (but you probably won't anyway.)
I'll write you down what I've read in another forum:
signs for that "sickness" I've read about are: cramps, falling on the ground, strange jumping around, brown colour, sleeping on the ground, no moving etc.
might help: warm bathing with mg-citrate. uv-light, heating lamps, strict cleanliness. dusting the feeders (since yours doesn't eat try putting vitamine (D3 and B) etc. drops in the water..?)
but I'd really get her feces tested (if she defecates).
*keeping fingers crossed* =(
A short while ago I had her feces checked, and she was free of parasites. I'm afraid she is in the serious danger zone right now, no time to worry fecal samples. Does anyone know of anything I can do to keep her from dying? I have experienced this same situation with a pacman frog, it was a long grueling process that didn't end well... I don't want to lose her the same way.
Oh no is it appa??Maybe you could ring your Vet for advice since he/she knows you have already had allot of dealings with them lately. Just a thought....Worth giving it a go, some vets are really reasonable and as it might be related to the parasite medication. Good luck
Yeah the only problem was that the exotic specialist wasnt in today, but she will be in tommmorow. I will call her then, i just hope she lasts through the night. And yes its appa, shes my only whites.
There is a Vet member on this forum but I'm not sure of the name. Maybe post a message to John or Kurt as they may have an idea what to do just for tonight. I wish I could help. Sorry
Me too. I don't know what to tell you, other than I doubt its a bad reaction to metroniazole or fenbendazole. You have to seriously overdose on those drugs before there is damage to the frog. You have a lot of wiggle room with those two drugs.
My guess is she will be dead by morning. I hope I am wrong. Sorry.
I think the lesion is the key to this medical mystery.
Actually good news! She has returned to her normal color, has picked up her head and is sitting in her normal position (instead of like a throw rug), and is trying to catch crickets!. She has yet to get one but she in a small container with five and I'm sure she will soon. She seems alert and active and I really hope shes fine. I don't know what the issue was but she seems to have snapped out of it!
I would still have her checked out.
yeah i will in the morning
That's so good to here. Let me know how you get on at the Vet.
Ok well the vet wasn't sure what was wrong with her and i couldn't afford the tests, so I've got a medicine to put on the cut on her leg, and a liquid food source i can give her by hand untill her appetite returns. I removed the cork bark background from her enclosure, im not sure if thats what cut her but its the only thing i can think did it. I gave it to my fire belly. So for now she is not back to her normal self, but much better and on the right track.
congrats and best of luck
Good luck. I do hope you sterilized the cork bark before handing it over to the fire-bellies.
I'm glad she's on the mend...Good luck
Yup, baked it in the oven, no worries Kurt.
Thanks for your concern Ebony and Tom I appreciate it.
I am so happy that Appa is feeling better (or seems to be.)
Reading this was like watching a horror movie, I was scared for her!
:O
Especially since I have a WTF, too. His name is Leonidas.
I'd be devastated if anything happened to him.
Congratulations, and best wishes for the recovering Appa!![]()
How is Appa?
Well recently she has been pretty good. It seems like shes been eating but the recent mystery has been if shes actually eating the crickets or are they escaping the cage, as i have seen several walking around the room. I'm going to fool proof the cage and feed her in a separate container tomorrow. But all in all she seems alright, if i can get her to eat live food again she will be all better.
That is awesome.
