So how did the grass do. I'm thinking of drilling the bottom of the WTF viv and planting grass for the bottom then using planters for plants. Just looking to keep the humidity up in the viv. I was thinking of seeding some core mat for this. Just looking to see if anyone else has used or using lawn grass as a substrate for the non-burrowing frogs.

I would think that a Viv would be way too humid for any grass other than a Bermuda mix or something similar to grow in. As far as for a burrowing frog tank, the grass would grow a root "mat", preventing the frog from burrowing if grown extensively enough.

Gail, there are plenty of options to have a grass like plant in a Viv. Since you're trying to create humidity, we can rule out any marginals, like eleocharus parvula. You can look into a few species of horsetail fern. There are a few species that are smaller in stature and would look like grass, all while helping keep humidity in the tank

I'm looking for something that will give a nice thick carpet like effect using natural plants and figure some type of "lawn" grass would work best. This is just something that pooped into my head today at work. I hate it when that happens.

If you can get a "bare" version of Bermuda grass. That would probably work. It's very tough and likes humidity. It's very commonly grown on golf courses due to it's toughness. I have never played on a course that wasn't Bermuda in Florida.

Thanks Bill, I'm going to try to grow a nice thick layer on core mat first since I'll have to relocated the troops, tear down the tank, have it drilled blahblahblah. Might be finished this fall.

I've often thought about this also...why not grass? I'll be interested to see how it works out.
