Do you have some pictures of it?
Maybe it is a wound caused by the escaping attempts.
Had it with wild caught tree frogs as well, mostly on the tip of the snout.

I would love to help you, but i can't diagnose it accurate enough to tell you what is wrong at the moment.
Also not sure what is readily available in Malta regarding medication or vets.

If the wounds are fresh and not bacterial infected you may move the frog to a sterile enclosure,
    some wet paper towels etc.
Cover the sides so the frog won't jump against it that quick because it sees there is something in front of him,
captive bred frogs are used to this, that's why my guess would be it is a wild caught frog.
You then may use a solution of 1 ml Betadine (povidone-iodine (PVPI)) to 20 ml of clean water on the wound for 6 days to prevent it from infection.

If the wound is already infected, you need some medicine like Ampicillin powder, Baytril or Bactyfec in the same sterile enclosure described before.
You can best contact a vet for a consult.
He/she can take a swab to see if there is already an infection and can give you a calculated dose to treat the wound with.
If you do so, chances are great he will do just fine.

If the wound isn't to bad, you can even let it heal up on it's own.
I also had it with my tree toads, in the beginning i got them they always ripped their nose against the glass or iron mesh.
Because i didn't wan't to treat them without end i tried to let it just dry up.
I covered the sides so they saw they couldn't jump trough there and they are now well settled,
some only having minor scars on those spots.

The betadine solution can be made by mixing 1 ml of betadine in 20-25ml of luke water.
This can be dropped on the surface of the wound 2 times a day (note that you don't use it on a deep wound tho)
The betadine prefends the wound from infecting, just as it does in human.
