Default Are they worth their keep?

I am seriously considering getting an African bullfrog sometime in the future, but I want to know some things that I cannot read on care pages and online articles. Are they worth the investment? I love how large they are and that they are in the ranidae family (I love nomenclature) I would definitely want a male (if you're gonna own the second largest frog in the world then go big or go home) but how much should I be expecting to pay for one? (juvenile preferably) and how are they personality wise? Are they hungry rocks of frogs? or are they personable, (I've been spoiled by my whites tree frogs' and African clawed frog's quirky individual personalities) oh and what is their growth rate, generalized (I realize by diet choice they may grow faster or slower) So thank you for your replies in advance

They are definitely worth the "investment".....as far as cost goes, they are relatively inexpensive pets. Juveniles go for anywhere between $20-75 depending on who you get them from. I had a group of juveniles recently and I was having a hard time selling them at $40 each.

Personality-wise they are the coolest frogs I have ever kept. They are much more active than even some tree frogs and are way more interactive (especially during feeding lol).

They are possibly my fav frog. They can be active but they also have an estivation period. So you won't see much or hear much from them then. But if you like the Ranidae family then you will love these. They are a bit tricky to find a true giant. Tons of people sadly are selling dwarfs as giants. It wouldnt be so bad if these dwarfs looked just like the giant adspersus just tiny. But they don't. They do not have the same beautiful green color and hugely proportioned head. They have longer noses and lots of brown color in comparison. No thank you. And if you can, buy a few froglets at once (keep separate) this way you have a much better chance at having a male. The babies at very young age are pretty much impossible to distinguish male from female. I added a pic of what a true giant looks like as a baby. Notice the 3 bright green dorsal stripes. Dwarfs stripes are Carmel colored and some types don't have them at all. Also rich blue coloration under the back legs. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thank you so much for the distinguishing features between dwarfs and giant juveniles I was worried about that. Where would be a good place to get one from? Just get a trustworthy petshop to order one? or is there a better place/way?

You can order them online from kingsnake.com or faunaclassifieds.com. Or you could find a pet shop that carries them. However; I'd recommend Jela's Phat Phibs who also resides on this board. I have gotten several frogs from him and he or his girlfriend will answer ANY questions you may have about them.

African Bullfrogs are definitely worth the "investment" and are a fun interactive frog, as mentioned before, especially during feeding time. It's never a dull moment with them. However, I enjoy both interactive & non-interactive species of frogs. I probably enjoy the more laid back species more just because I'm more of a observant person by nature and enjoy watching things.

If you do decide to get one (or two - or three, lol) you WON'T be disappointed. Good luck!

Ya I hear good things abt Phat Phibs. Be very careful abt kingsnake.com because there is people on there selling dwarfs as giants. Iv even been lied to by them saying "I bred them myself and have the giant parents" well the fact is NO they didn't. Last time i checked one vender that anyone knows of has successfully bred these in captivity and they use hormone injections. If someone else has bred these we would love to hear your story and congratulations!!
