Question: how do I make sure my plants are pesticide/herbicide/fertilizer free or how to make it so they are
Question: how do I make sure my plants are pesticide/herbicide/fertilizer free or how to make it so they are
I bought some plants at petco that were advertised buy 2 get one free only to find out they were not on sale, so I returned them and am now looking elsewhere to buy my plants for my red eye viv. I have a few plant nurseries by my house and the big name home improvement stores. I was wondering what I can do guarantee that if the plants do have anything bad in them I can get them safe for my frog. I've read to wash the plant out under tap water and to rinse the roots and leaves. Is there something else?
Also here's my idea for a few plants if anyone has specific names or types that'd be AWESOME!
- 1 Dwarf Elephant ear
- 1 climbing plant or vine to grow on a 13in piece of flat cork
- 2-3 ferns or broad leaf plants
- 2-4 ??? plants
the tank is 24in long, 24in tall, and 18in deep with the false bottom the height is reduced to about 19in.... any suggestions/tips would be great also specific plants that ya'll have found that work well
the lighting will be two 6000k fluorescent tubes (fish tank lights)

Re: Question: how do I make sure my plants are pesticide/herbicide/fertilizer free or how to make it so they are
There are at least one gazillion threads about this exact topic, but I'll write something quick.
Rinse the plant thoroughly, remove as much soil as you possible can, replace with Exo-terra's Plantation soil/Zoo med's Eco-Earth/something like that. Rinse the actually plant thoroughly (stem, leaves etc). To ensure there's nothing nasty on them, leave them for as long as possible before adding them to the enclosure.
A few examples of nice plants for red eyes:
Lucky bamboo(which is not actual bamboo, but that's what it's called in the US)/Dracaena sanderiana
Pothos/Epipremnum aureum
Snake plant/Sansevieria trifasciata
Creeping fig/Ficus pumlia
Dieffenbachia (some use it, others are are afraid of it)

Unless they're very poisonous and it's a good chance that the frogs get in contact with that, there's really not that many "bad" plants. Basically, use what you want and use your common sense. If feeling unsecure about a specific plant, you can always ask. But just use what you think will look good and that will create a good tropical tree frog setup.

You can try Jungle Box Online - Frogs, Vivarium Supplies, Feeders and Tropical Plants I have used them for some dry goods and they seem to be a pretty place. I had a order that got delayed due to some reasons beyond their control and they actually sent me a couple Broms with my order to make up for the delay. Their selection is not as big as Joshs frogs but they seem like a really honest company.
