A while ago I started a vivarium and stuck some bromeliads in there. The issue is these bromeliads I bought seem to have little "barbs" or points on the leaves. They're only tiny, and I'm not even sure if they'll affect the frog.

I've seen a few photos online of people with frogs sitting inside these, so I assumed they must be harmless. However, when I bought my frog today (magnificent tree frog) the lady I bought it from told me to remove them, and advised I use plastic plants.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on this? I'd really love to keep these plants in here, and I'd hate to go to all this work just to stick plastic stuff in there. =/

P.S, great job with the forum. It's been incredibly helpful for a beginner like myself.
Hi Grungnir,

I actually just posted a personal opinion about this subject. Not the Broms specifically, but sharp things our enclosures.
ie sharp little pcs of metal sticking out of the stems the of fake plants and vines.

I think if you do a search on air plants in the enclosure, you will find it? It was last week?

The Broms and air plants ARE beautiful!! The lovely blooms add great color. However, I have decided not to use them because of the sharp tip on the leaves. Lots of people do though. It simply depend on the habits of the frog.

I have red eyes- If they get startled and take a leap ( as I have witnessed-- many times ), they will , for sure, impale themselves on something sharp. Even the edges of some other plants are sharp! I use my cheek as a test. If it feels scratchy- It's NO GO !

A little low growing plant called Fittonia is cultivated in 3 or 4 different leaf colors. I will take a pic in of one in a bit an return to post it. They ave a little flower that blooms similar to a Broms, but a completely different leave structure.

You will find a nice long list of plants here :
Amphibian Care >> Tropical Terrarium Design
(note - on this list ) Dieffenbachia - is a plant that some say is toxic? )
I like this list- it has a link to pics of most of the plants !

Have fun
