ok so originally this started out as a dark spot which i thought was to do with shedding but now its gone white and today its goin dark around the edges. sorry about the picture quality but i think u can kinda see what i mean, does anyone know what this is or if its normal (well semi normal). any input would b great. cheers guys. first pic is how it looked last week. others r from last night
Not sure what it is but it is definitely not normal. I have never seen either of my White's tree frogs shed, and I'm not sure that they do that. Maybe wait for a more experienced member to reply, but my guess is that your little buddy is going to need to see a vet.
well iv seen my other frog oki shedding (sort of). not willow tho. oki had a dark spot like this aswell but i dont ever rememeber it goin white (maybe it did i just dont remember). ever since wen its near sheddin time, where the dark spot was (it does go back to normal) it goes dark first. it seems to b lookin better as tho it is healing but im just unsure of what it is. i did have a wooden tunnel in there but iv took it out incase there were any sharp bits she may have caught it on. shes acting fine. shes still eatin loads, jumpin around, fully active and just generaly bein her normalself
Any chance this frog got up against a light bulb?
It definitely is not normal and should be looked at by an experienced Herp Vet.
They're in an exo terra with a canopy on top so they haven't touched the bulb. I think it has a repti glo 10.0 uvb bulb. There is a lil 'dip' in the background where they sometimes sit which is right at the top under the light but no way they r touchin the bulb. Iv checked the wood tunnel and there's no sharp bits so its not from that. Can anyone suggest anythin I can do at home? Like I say she's actin fine. It doesn't seem to bother her. Thanks
Does the skin give you the idea it is somewhat loose?
And does he fold it's legs underneath when at rest? Or a little bit apart from the body?
It doesn't look loose it just looks as tho a piece has peeled off. I had the same thing with my other frog which did look more like a flap. This doesn't but they both looked the same at the start. My other frog was fine and still is. She hasn't changed the way she rests. She sleeps on the back wall behind a plant with her legs under her (the same as oki).
White's definitely shed. It is usually dependent upon humidity, growth rate, and stuff like that. What was the outcome with your other frog? Are they housed together? I would agree with taking the frog to the vet. Try not to wait too long because that's one thing frogs don't always have once we notice they're sick, time.
Hi Mim,
I actually went to bed thinking about your frog last night.
I think Don's idea about the hot spot is on the right track.
I think it is possible that we are looking at a burn. Maybe not necessarily from actually having touched something, but having been too close to a heat source?
I have Red Eyes- I have an Exo terra as well WITHOUT a light placed on the screen.
In the winter ( it's in the basement) I have to add heat/light sources around the enclosure to maintain the temp.
I have learned over the past 2 years , that the black plastic rim / the top trim of the exo-terra gets extremely hot. Hot enough for me to have to move my hand quickly if a light/heat source is too close. I have had to remove bulbs that were hung- even 8 inches -above the top. I think it has something to do with the actual material it is made of? For this reason, I have since moved the heat sources (shining if you will ) down the sides of the enclosure, and then monitor the temp of the glass from the inside.
Perhaps , put your hand inside the enclosure and try to place the back of your hand on all areas near lights/ heat sources. Leave it there for some time and see what you think about how hot it gets. I'm sure you know it does not take too much to damage their delicate skin. It could be like a sunburn type thing? I removed the background from my enclosure shortly after purchasing it because they would sit on that little ledge very close to the screen !!!
I bet a qualified vet will be able to distinguish between it being a shedding problem vs a burn; especially as it heals.
I hope you find a solution.
How does he look currently?
If you don't feel comfortable continuing to talk about , I understand.
It is a shame sometimes what happens, on threads and forums, regarding the whole right vs wrong and opinions thing.

hi lynn thank u so much for ur input.
i guess it could look like a burn. iv checked the top mesh screen and that doesnt feel hot but im guessin that designed not to. i put my hand there and i guess it could be warm and like u say with their skin bein so sensitive it could b the cause. i did catch her sleepin up in the lil crook again this mornin. i may try to either put somethin there so she cant sit in there or take the background out like u suggested. i am gettin a larger tank next weekend so will check that background aswell and make sure there arent any ledges for her to sit so high up.
i have a heat mat placed at the back on the bottom half which is behind thebackground and has a foam sheet outside the tank to keep the heat in but that doesnt feel hot so i dont think it is anythin to do with that. iv not noticed the plastic gettin hot but ill definately keep an eye (or finger) out for that just incase.
today she doesnt look any worse. it still doesnt seem to bother her and she was eatin and jumpin around last nite fine. i think it does look like it could b healing. iv put some pics thta iv just this second took and a pic of the hole she sometimes sits in at the top.
the top of the canopy does feel pretty warm. what do u think about the bulb im using? its a repti glo 10.0 uvb bulb. theres so many different opinions on bulbs i went with wot they said at the shop (they r highly reccomended). with the new tank ill b using two seperate canopies (tank is 60cm length and i have 2x 30cm canopies) so id like to make sure i get the right bulbs if u think this is wrong. i dont know if switchin to a red/blue bulb would b better. im quite confused about the lighting situation.
if it is a burn does anyone know of anything i can put on the frog or anythin that mite help the healing?
thank u so much.
I believe 10.0 UVB is too strong for frogs. A 2.0 or 5.0 is fine but I think your 10.0 is causing sun damage to your frogs skin. Also as Lynn has stated they could be burned by parts of the enclosure that are too close to the light. Heat trancfer into dark colored materials can cause them to get very hot. Also that is a very powerful UVB bulb. It could be the issue since both frogs have been exposed to the light and both have the same problem. It looks like a burn to me.
You may want to see a vet ASAP.
iv had a look online and they dont really do 2.0 in the compact so im guesin itll b a 5.0. wot do ppl think about coloured bulbs? i found pro rep balls and they do green blue yellow and red. wots the difference?
i thought this as they dont need uv like reptiles do but since it was a specialist reptile shop i went with what they said. the green and yellow bulbs dont fit the canopy but the red and blue do so anyone any ideas wots best to get. red, blue, 5.0 uvb (if so i guess the lower wattage)
ok, well iv just put in a normal light bulb for now just for the light as i dont want the frogs too confused if i just leave them with no light. pets at home do the 2.0 (26w)so i think ill go with the lower just incase, especially since willow is bad. hopefully thatll b better for them. thank u everyone!
Just because they specialize in reptiles doesn't mean they also specialize in amphibians. They are completely different and have different requirements.10.0 UVB would be fine for most reptiles as they need UVB light. Amphibians do not need it and can actually be harmed by it. They benefit from 4 to 6 hours of UVB light a day but that's all. UVB radiation is used to naturaly produce Vitamine D3 in the body. Since the lights that produce the Radiation are usually too bright or strong we provide D3 through supplementation Like the calcium pouders that contain D3. I'm not saying that the shop doesn't know anything about amphibians, but that seems like a bad recomendation on their part.
Until you can seek vet treatment you can put Original Neosporine on the wounds. Be sure that its ORIGINAL NEOSPORINE WITHOUT PAINKILLER. The painkiller will kill the frog. The Neosporine will protect against infection and help the healing process.
no i totall agree with u. i have a few friends who have snakes, lizards, toads etc who use the store and rate it highly. tbf, i got my whites from there and they told me a 30x30x45 would b suitable for 2 whites (i only went for one) so i got 2 as suggested. i dont think they thought to tell me that id need to upgrade the tank once they were bigger or maybe it was just that they didnt know. i dont think i will b using them again unless it is just to get frogs if i cant get them from anywhere else (they r the nearest store and thats about 30 mins away-we dont drive either). im not really very happy with them now that i know wot i do! i certainly wont recommend them. right im gonna go try sort out a lift to pets a home for a new bulb!
