Default New Viv! Dart Frog fever has set in!

    Hey Guys!!

Traded an old TV I had for this 120 Gallon aquarium, it's not perfect, but it's a fixer upper for sure. Measures 50" long x 22" wide x 24" tall. It has a crack on the bottom that was sealed with silicone, but it still solid.

    Here it is:

The plan was to get one or two Tomato frogs, but my local supplier cannot get them for the next year or so.

With that being said, Kurt informed me that the type of vivarium I was going to create would suite tomato's but they would likely dig up all the moss and some plants. Not only that, but I have been researching dart frogs for a while now, and I just love that they don't eat crickets, I would much rather breed sprintails and fruitflies! Asides for all that, they won't dig up or destroy any planys in the viv which will be great!

I was told the best starter Dart frog is the Dendrobates leucomelas, which do you recommend? I will be ordering form UnderStory, so I will have a wide selection!

Since my 210 Gallon toad viv is on hold due to not being to able to resin the wood correctly, I will have to wait until spring to continue with that build. So, for the remainder of the winter, this is going to be my project!

Let me know what you think!

    Thanks,

    ~Royce

I was also looking at these frogs:

Dendrobates auratus "Nicaraguan Green and Black" Dendrobates auratus | Understory Enterprises

Dendrobates tinctorius “Azureus” Dendrobates tinctorius | Understory Enterprises

Mantella milotympanum Mantella milotympanum | Understory Enterprises

    So hard to choose!

Just a question, why not Red Eye Tree Frogs? They're pretty and won't kill you?

Dart's won't kill you?! lol! Darts are much cheaper and easier to aquire where I live than RETF's and I'm still in the process of building a 50 Gallon, 5' 5" tall RETF viv. It, like my toad viv had to be put on hold.

Strange question. Why not ABF? Why not ACF? Why not hamster? Because he want's dart frogs, that's why. Tree frogs are not similar in any way, really.

Also, PDF are not poisonuss in captivity. They get their poison from the insects they eat in the wild, so unless feeding with some rare specific dangerous ant, they are completely harmless.

That tank is a nice find.

Tough choice with such a big tank and you might find your going to want a nice size group of them. Leucs are definitely the easiest.
Since everyone has blue frogs, I would be hopping on the Mantella bandwagon.
    Mantella milotympanum | Understory Enterprises

I don't think they would be the boldest like Leucs but should be a ton of fun to watch in a group.

I was sure pleased with it. I guess dart frogs don't come cheap, eh? For three leucs or milos (same price as leucs), with shipping I'm looking at over 350$... So now I can't find Tomato frogs and can't afford darts... lol

Yeah, shipping would be cheaper than the gas round trip.

Sounds like a great build Royce. They are all very good choices. I'm really starting to plan a build myself for PDF's from Understory also. Considering Leucs or Auratus for a start. Its amazing how the more a person reads and gets involved with frogs the more a person wants.
    don't mess with my frogs
