Ok, so I have been thinking of methods to separate land and water for the red eyed tree frogs I hope to get in a month, and I came up with this "blueprint"...
I would like to highlight that i purposely want to water level to be a tiny bit below the peek of the gravel, hopefully to stop the substrate from becoming soaked, would this work?
Also, the water will be about 2.5 inches deep with stones and plants to stop the frogs from drowning, but I was wondering if I could put any fish/shrimps in here?
Heres my pic btw, forgive the bad attempt at drawing it but macs don't have paint lol...

I like your idea for your tank. I have water on the bottom of mine filled with the same amount of water. however i didn't use gravel, but i'm sure that'll work since i have seen other tanks with a similar set up. (Someone else may know more about useing stone as a bottom)?I used a false bottom for mine. The fish idea i like.
i wanted that to. When i asked about it on this forum, some told me some things to keep in mind.
1. make sure the fish isn't to small, so that it'll become food.
2. Make sure the fish isn't big enough to eat your frog.
3. Use nonaggressive fish. ones that won't nip at your frogs.
Thats what i was told so i hope that helps.Good luck with it and can't wait to see your tank and Red-Eyed Leaf Frog's
Thanks, and what method did you use? and yeah I think perhaps guppies would be ok? and I know you can get small fresh water shrimps which act as cleaners, plus I will have a small filter, so cleaning the water will be much more infrequent
Thanks again :]
p.s. What light should I use for red eye tree frogs, and where can I buy them? (online)
Hi Zak,
You have good plans going here !
Could you possibly post the dimensions of the enclosure you are planning to use for red eye tree frogs?
How many red eyes are you planning to purchase ?
It's great that you are building/and setting up PRIOR to getting your frogs!
water level:
Red eye tree frogs do not swim really well ! A water area meant for soaking should not be over their chins.
If you do decide to make it deeper ( ie with fish - I do not know about fish in the same enclosure ?) they MUST have plenty of
things to grab onto to climb out.

Your welcome.i used a false bottom technique. I used a plastic egg crate, i got that at home depot(since your in england i don't know where you could get it) lol
i cut it to size and ziptied the peices together. I made it three inches high and left three inches up front, so that there is a little pond right up front. Then i covered the egg crate with window screening, then used expandable foam for terrian. I have a hole right up front in the false bottom so i could put my water filter in(and it makes a water fall) i'll add some pics of it so you can see a little better what i'm saying. I'm not great at explaining things.![]()
The lighting someone else may know more about. I'm trying to get that one figured out myself. hope that'll help. I'll try and post pics as soon as i can so you can see what i'm saying.
LEt me know if you need better pics.hope that helps
