I have 3 fire bellied toads housed in a 10 gallon half land/ half water terrarium with a filter. One of the toads I've had for about 4 years and I noticed that he was looking a little less active over the last two days and one of his eyes looked a little puffy underneath and a cloudy color. I removed him from the tank and put him in a separate travel tank and cleaned out the main terrarium, replacing the moss and filter and sanitizing the water, before putting my other 2 toads back in.
I treated Jack's eye with saline solution last night and I'm pretty sure it looked a lot clearer this morning but I am keeping him separated from the other toads to check up on him. About two weeks ago, I also noticed a red bump on his nose that cleared up after a couple days and assumed he must have bumped it on something in the tank. Could these be related? Is the most likely cause that the tank needed cleaning? Normally I clean it about once a month. The amphibian specialist is not available for 3 more days and I'm wondering if and when I can put Jack back in with the other toads.
Also, should I continue the saline treatment on his eye if the cloudiness clears up? I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. I know that amphibians absorb through their skin so I put him in a little bit of saline and massaged it into his eye for about 30 seconds then put him in a tank with a thin layer of water to heal. Is there a better way to do this?
I've had him for a long time and I'm really worried about him! Thanks!
