Okay, so I know that GE II is the best stuff to use in a vivarium, but I had read in one of John's threads (Can't seem to locate it now...) that there is a silicone in the GE II line not to use...
This is the stuff I purchased:
GE Silicone | GE Silicone II, Window & Door Sealant, BROWN, 290 mL | Home Depot Canada
It's 100% silicone but in it's description on the tube it says "also provides mold free product protection" I was told to avoid silicone that said this, but every tube of GE II I have looked at does, and they all say they are 100% silicone, so are they safe or not?
Also, is this silicone safe:
GE Silicone | GE Silicone II, Window & Door Sealant, BLACK, 290 mL | Home Depot Canada
I purchased a tube of it by mistake (except it's brown too, not black), but upon reading the tube, they seem to be identical, other than the packaging...
Thanks,
~Royce
You buy the GE Silicone II window and door version as you did and DO NOT buy the kitchen and bath. :-)
1.0.0 Red Eyed Leaf/ Frog - Agalychnis callidryas
1.1.1 Bumblebee Dart Frog - Dendrobates leucomelas
1.1.0 Dendrobates truncatus - Yellow Striped
1.1.1 Dendrobates tinctorius – Bakhuis Mountain
1.1.0 - Dendrobates tinctorius - Powder Blue
1.1.0 - Ranitomeya vanzolinii
Well, I guess I am late to this party. Currently constructing my 40 gallon breeder for my African Bullfrog. I used the DAP Kitchen and Bath Silicone. It sounds like I used the wrong type. If someone could give me the lowdown that would be great. I guess I will have to cut out the existing piece and re do with proper silicone.
Thanks,
B
If the tube states 100 percent silicone on the tube and does not list mold inhibitors as something added then you should be fine. You can call DAP and see if the product has mold inhibitors too.
Most people refrain from using kitchen and bath versions due to the addition of products like Bio-seal which is an added mold inhibitor.
There are so many threads on this topic here on FF and so many other forums over the internet. Most here will recommend GE Silicone II Window and Door since it doesn't list a mold inhibitor.
Call DAP, if they say there is, then I'd pull it and start over. If they say none is added and its the same as Window and Door with only 100 percent silicone, then you should be fine leaving it.
You will probably have to start over and can try using something like Agro sealant, or a product with similar characteristics.
