Alright so after having my viv for my red eyes set up for about a month I put my male in there... today I saw what look like little gnats or flies in the tank, some would land on him and then fly off, what are they?
I know they aren't springtails or stuff like that, so don't bother
I saw some of these (i don't know if they are the same or different in my red foot cherry head tortoise tank.
How do I get rid of them, are they bad for the frogs, what are they?
They are likely fungus gnats. They lay their eggs in moist soil, the larvae eat fungus in the substrate, when they hatch they fly away and start the cycle over. They are not dangerous, just annoying. Not sure what the best method is to get rid of them. It seems like the majority of the ones I had disappeared after I covered all of my substrate with sheets of live moss, dunno why.
i thought they were mosquitos it freaked me out
Yeah my red eye's viv has them too, annoying, I just deal with it now :|
I just let my rain system run for a few hours and boom no more gnats
