im having trouble getting my frog to eat red worms even after i cut them for her to eat. she had a large gut loaded cricket yesterday morning so maybe she is still full from that but im out of crickets and only have red worms left. does anybody know how to get their frog to eat red worms?
It depends if your frog is interested in the worms. Likely she is still full from the cricket, but you can try rubbing the worm on her "lips", every time I do this with my horned frog, he bites the worm. Good luck!
Pacmans can be picky eaters. They can be persnickety, especially about trying new foods. Each frog has its own personal taste about what they do or do not like. I had a hard time getting Grif to try earthworms, but once she actually ate one she loved them! Now they are her second favorite food (after horn worms). Cutting the worm so the frog can smell it is one method to entice them, but you are already doing that... are the chunks appropriately sized? Picky eaters will reject food if they feel it is too big or too small. You can keep trying to rub the worm gently on the frog's lips; that usually triggers a response. Good Luck!
alrigh thanks i went to the store and got more crikets and she ate one lol
Some are die hard cricket eaters for a lot of their life. Some times if you drop one of the worms infront of them with out them noticing what you have they will snap at the worm when it hits the ground. Could try that. Most of the time they are just picky. Atleast she ate.
It is good to diversify their diet though. Use crickets as a staple but still offer other foods occasionally. You never know when she'll decide to try them.![]()
oks lol will do thanks for the advice
You're welcome.
how did u get ur frogs to eat from tongs
Loki took to it right away. Grif on the otherhand didn't like them at all until after she recovered from being ill. You have to find a food item they can't resist. For Grif its Hornworms(also known as Goliath worms). It takes time for them to realize that they can get food from them. Some will eat from them right away without training/some take time/others never will. It all depends on your frogs personality. Keep trying and he/she may take from them.
Where do you get your worms? There's a bait shop down the road from me, but I wasn't sure if it'd be okay to get them there or someplace else. I was thinking of trying worms with Jr since he's so ready to eat all the time. I really hate crickets too...

Yeah, crickets are smelly and they escape a lot. Worms are a very good staple food, and I haven't had a worm escape yet, hehehee. I did have a slight incident when my mom was at my apartment, opened the fridge, and found the worms... but that's another story.
I usually buy my worms at one of two pets stores. I know quite a few people get them from Walmart. You can get them from a bait shop, just make sure it is a reliable one and be 100% SURE that the worms have no dies or chemicals. These get used a lot for fishing bait and can be fatal for your frog. Also, check the worms. You should just smell fresh dirt. If you ever smell anything bad, don't feed them to your frog. Better safe than sorry!
Gwen is only about an inch long right now. She is timid of her tiny crickets. I'll try a worm if I can get it small enough and still wriggling for her. She's an avid hunter and will race around her tank to get the best position to nab her prey. I tried blood worms when she was a tiny baby, but she didn't go for them, just watched them wriggle.
I'll ask my mom if she knows anything about them. I'll try to get down there soon. I'm really interested in finding out if Jr will be a picky brat like Gwen.
Red wigglers are smaller and a good starter worm. You can also cut up appropriate chucks of earthworms. They have multiple hearts so they don't die, thus you still get the wiggling worm to trigger the hunter response. I think introducing other food items when they are younger helps them be less picky. Grif was fed only crickets for like the first 3-4 months and was then very resistant to trying other types of food. With Loki, we offered other items right away: crickets and red wigglers and the occasional mealworm or waxworm. Obviously it has to do with the frog's personality as well. Some of them will be picky regardless. But it is good to at least offer other food.
I've offered him katydids before. He's a very good eater and only turns down food when it's offered from tongs. I herd the crickets to him using a stick and he seems to be fine with that. I think he'll accept the new food easy enough. Now I need to find the worms.
