What are good easy roaches to use as feeders for big boys such as marinus (Surinam locale), guttatus, and paracnemis ? I've looked at Giant Lobster roaches , maybe there are better species out there ?
Dubia roaches are great.
have to agree, dubia roaches are going to give you the best bang for your buck plus they have soft exo skeletons that provent impaction, high protien, all around good buy.
I'm actually going to invest in the larger roach species . I've been told by many folks , dubia will not be the best choice for toads because unless you throw the roach in front of the toad and the toad eats it . The roach will bury in the substrate.
I get all my frogs used to feeding outside their enclosure. I think that helps a lot
I'd go with the lobsters. You're right about the dubias, they play dead then hide. I have also had my fire bellied spit them out (I think because they don't move when they're being eaten)
I've now started a Dubia breeding colony. I have 150 ( give or take ) roaches to start off with. These do bury in the substarte when disturbed but since these are nocturnal as well as my Bufos, I'm thinking any remaining/ uneaten roach will probably resurface to look for food giving the toads another chance to munch. I would like to also try lateralis since they are the size of an adult cricket. I may start a colony of them , anyone have good luck with these with toads or frogs ?
Locusts are also a good meal. I breed them and my frogs just love them. Great for all sizes of frog as they start out at 5 mm and grow adult size 80 mm. Been breeding them for 3 years now and my frogs go for them before any other food I provide.
I find my frogs and toads absolutely love the lateralis, and they are much more cricket like. They are very fast though. If they like the dubia, go with them. If your frogs will eat from a dish, that might be an option too if they hide too much.
Ebony, locusts aren't available to buy in the US.
