I've noticed over the past week or so that the back of my waxy monkey tree frog has turned slightly brown or tan. The texture hasn't changed nor are there any bumps. His behavior hasn't changed and he's still eating. I feed him 4-8 crickets every couple of days and I dust them with calcium and vitamin powder once a week. The temp is ~85F and humidity is ~35%. Substrate is eco earth. Source of water is a bowl in the tank. I have a 12 hour light cycle set up. He's the only frog living in his habitat. I have another frog in a different tank and it's fine. I've had my waxy for 2 months.
I don't know where I went wrongI'm scared that it's a bacterial infection.
I'm desperate over here. I'd be greatly appreciative if someone has advice.
Everything seems to be ok. It could be a case of a dark coloured enviroment. Many amphibians will darken against a dark background.
I think the biggest factor in the coloration of frogs is light. More light is brighter frog, less light is duller frog.
Other factors are heat and humidity. Warmer and lower humidity is brighter frog and cooler and more humidity is darker frog..... I think?
Lastly, their mood can affect their coloration, if they're happy they should usually be a brighter color.
Hope this helps![]()
iv no experience with these fogs but i have two whites tree frogs. one is always a lovely green where the other will change from bein light green, to bluey turquoisey, to quite dark, sort of brownish. he seems fine as hes eatin normally etc. like the others said it could b too do with lightin and background as this is wot iv put okis colour changin down to
Thanks so much guys! I don't know why I didn't think about the lighting and background. Sure enough, I got home early from work today, when his lights were still on, and he was greener. A few hours later when it was dark, he was sitting on a branch and he was a darker brown.
I'm glad he's okayThanks for the help!
Might be b/c the dark tank, most frogs & toads change color to dark habitats
I don't think its sick.
Good luck to you ;-)
Everyone is right about the dark backround reflecting the animals color. One thing I would change, the substrate. Reason being is- waxy monkeys are extremely cool frogs, but they are quite dumb. In other words the lights are on, but no one is home. lol. If they miss a cricket and hit the bedding with it's tongue, they will swallow it. This will cause impaction. Paper towels aren't the best looking substrate but seems to be the safest. Hope that helps.
