My red eye tree frog has been a dark green ever since I got him. I've had him four about 4 days now. I have peaked in on him at night at he is usually awake and soaking in his water dish. The only time I saw him go bright green was in the container on the car ride home. He tends to stick to the back dark wall in the terrarium during the day. He appears to be eating but I plan on using the cricket bowl tomorrow night just to be sure, but I've yet to see crickets the next day.
The only lighting I have on him is a infrared during the day, then it's completely dark at night.
Is he just still stressed??
One major factor in the coloration of frogs is light. More light is brighter frog, less light is duller frog.
Other factors are heat and humidity. Warmer and lower humidity is brighter frog and cooler and more humidity is lighter frog..... I think?
Lastly, their mood can affect their coloration, so it could still be a little stressed from it's arrival.
So just let it settle in, keep a safe humidity and temperature, and perhaps a white light instead I'd red? Whichever works beat for you....
Give your frog some time to settle in. It can take weeks before they are comfortable with their surroundings.
Provide the right day and night conditions and plenty of climbing and perching places. RTF's don't spend time on substrate so having plenty of pathways of leaves, vines, and branches will make him more comfortable and settle in faster.
As for color, they change color fast and I can be taking pics of a bright green RTF and then minutes later he is dark dark brown.
Don't have night lighting since they seem to shy away from activity when a lights on.
So, relax, may take some time but he'll come around over time. I still have to peek at my 1 1/2 year old RTFs with a flashlight sometimes but I do catch them staring out at the Tv or computer monitor way too much.
Thanks.. That makes me feel so much better.. What do you use for substrate?
Coco fiber substrate like Eco earth or plantation soil

Are you using a water conditioner to make your frog's soaking water safe and change it daily?
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
My frogs vary in color also. They are often a nice lime or mint green during the day while sleeping and a dark green or green-brown when hunting at night.
