Vivarium Help

Hello all, I am new to this forum but need some help. I currently have a nice set up for my FBT's, but am very interested in making a new project. I want my new setup to have a canister filter with the filter being drilled into the bottom of the tank. But my question is, what kind of fittings will i need for a project like this? I have seen many tanks with holding tanks under neath the main tank but cant understand what that is used for and if I will need the same. If I could get some input or even some pictures of some of your tanks just to get an idea of how I will have to pipe it up to make it work. I greatly appreciate all of your input!
