Smile New to the Froggy scene ;0)

    Hi All,

I am new to the forum. I am from the U.K and am in the process (i.e I am picking them up next week) of getting a pair of American Green Tree Frogs. I have been and done the Guinea Pig breading for 5 years, then moved on to Geckos of which currently I have 7 and I know quite a lot about and want to expand my collection of pets to Frogs. I have had stick insects, which were dead easy to keep and had up to thirty at one stage. But since they all died off a year ago, my 18x12x12 exoterra tank has reamained empty. So I thought of getting into frogs (and maybe at a later stage Anoles). I have totally cleaned, scrubbed, antibacterialezed (if that's a word?) and the tank is ready. I have done some background research on what I need but just need some basic suggestions, must-not's, must-do's etc. I am getting a pair of American Green Tree Frogs as research tells me this is the best type to get when a beginner. I will be going for an Aboreal setup (that's me sounding like I know what I'm talking about lol) so I have a heatmat which will be fixed to the side of the tank (outside) for warmth and air temperature. Just about to order a Hygrometer for humidity etc. I am not sure of what substrate I will use. I don't want to use any sand as, with geckos, this can cause impaction, so any ideas? Do I put a water dish in? Are artificial plants just as good as real plants? Is vermicuilte better than using moss etc. Any help and tips would be great!

    Thanks,

    Mark.

    Hello and welcome Mark.

Eco earth coco fiber substrate is best as it does not cause impaction if accidentally ingested while eating. Vermiculite should not be used. Moss has varying opinions but i myself do not use it due to the impaction risk. A water bowl of some type is a must with dechlorinated water and should be changed daily.

I do not have green tree frogs, so hopefully some others will help here. Many tree frogs have similar needs though. ( I have red eye tree frogs ).

Good luck and keep us posted!

Welcome to the forum. I agree with Heather and Savannah on the substrate and vermiculite. As far as plants go, you can't beat live plants, they make it so natural.

Welcome to the forum! As theyve said, coco fiber is great, that's what I used when I got my whites tree frog in August. Im currently using zoo med frog moss because it looks good, reusable, keeps humidity awesomely, and doesn't get my frog and his water bowl dirty. Both are perfectly fine for a new frog...

As of plants, I use fake ones because they don't require too much care and don't pose any risks. The main reason I don't use real ones is I can never find them haha.

Anyway, welcome and good luck with your new frog!

Most plants aren't a risk at all. If you can get real ones, I definitely would! If I could find real ones I would use them.... The "easy-to-care-for" ones at least.

Welcome to Frog Forum Mark! I think live plants look better and will try to set-up a vivarium with them this year.
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

Look up Black Jungle Terraium Supply. They have a bunch of plants, and some easy to care for ones in there. They have some fairly sheap plants...depending on wich you get of course..
