dear all,
my name is mariska and im from the netherlands. i really like frogs and right now i have an big aquarium with 5 african dawrf frogs and guppies. i enjoy them very much. i also have a terrarium with a masagascar grandis pehlsuma... a gigant day gecko. his name is freddy and he is really cool! his is still a youngster tough... and im going to buy him a bigger cage soon. im thinking 1meter by 50cm by 60cm. i keep found of frogs and im wondering if i could combine a certain kind of frog with freddy, my gigant day gecko? it would be awsome if a frog could live at the bottom of my future cage while freddy lives above, it is a tree living lizard after all.
i like the pacman frogs and this kind of frogs seems to aquire about the same tropical temperature and humidity as freddy does. but i would like to know the opinion of some experienced pacman owners. freddy has not reached his full length yet, but i expect he will get approximitly 25cm. i read the pacman gets between 10 and 15cm and that it will eat everything. im afraid the same goes for freddy... they eat everything that will fit into their mouths. i saw a video on youtube on which a pacman ate a live mouse by holding its head until it sufficated... iew... and i definetly dont want that to happen to my freddy!!! or the other way around!!
soooo... what do you guys think? is a pacman suitable with a phelsuma grandis? if no: is their another kind of frog that will be able to live with freddy comfortably?
thank you in advance! i hope i hear from you soon!
kind regards,
mariska and freddy and the african dward frogs![]()
Sorry Mariska. That would be a bad idea. Although it would be cool if it were possible, but you can't keep mixed species together in the same enclosure. The Gecko and Pacman would not get along at all. They would more than likely try to eat eachother or fight all the time. One or both would end up seriously injured or worse. Pacmans are best kept alone and they prefer it that way unless its breeding season. I wish I could say it were possible, but you can't keep frogs with a Gecko.
Most frogs are toxic, so keeping them with your Phelsuma madagascariensis grandis would be a bad idea as they would share the same water source, and thus the gecko would be poisoned over time. Red-eyes are not toxic, however they are not aggresive feeders and day geckos are. So there is a good possibility that if they were housed together, that the red-eyes would starve.
It's just easier to house each species seperately. Community tanks are fine if you mix the right fish together, but that doesn't work outside of water too well.
thank you for you advice! i really appreciate it! what a same the pacman can not live along with the geckobut im glad i asked first! i would hate it if something bad had happened to my animals! perhaps i will get a pacman in the future... in its own enclosure of course haha! thank you!
You're welcome.
i was wondering if perhaps the coraltoeforg treefrog could combine with my gecko? or is this a bad idea as well?
im having trouble finding the english name for this frog... its this one: Koraalteenboomkikker - Wikipedia
You can't house any frog with a Gecko. Frogs and Toads release toxins from their skin like Kurt stated above. No interspecies amphibians or reptiles can be housed together. Your Gecko will attack the frogs and more than likely kill them. Also your Gecko may become sick and die from the toxins(poisons) the frogs produce. Plan on seperate enclosures for your frogs and reptiles. They just don't go hand in hand. Sorry.
thank you so much![]()
the pac man once sud adult would eat the gecko
Ceratophyrs and African Bullfrog Keeper For Life
The White's will eat the gecko also. Best to be safe and not house multiple species in one enclosure.
I have been keeping frogs for a good 2-3 years now and I have had tons of pacmans and everyone I have bought them frog has said to keep them by themselves. A gecko would not get along with any kind of frog. They have different habitat needs and is best to house them in separate enclosures. Pacmans especially have be notorious for eating anything they can catch, and have been known to even attack a human finger cleaning the cage. One should not even entertain keeping any species with a pacman, especially a lizard or snake with a long tail it could fit into his mouth.
People have had success with a Whites Tree Frog in a tank with other reptiles, but you should monitor them closely to make sure there is no violence. Also, it is recommended that the gecko should be slightly larger than the whites tree frog, so that the frog will not consume it, but not too large that the gecko would be able to eat the frog.
Good luck with your amphibians and reptiles![]()
