Hi Jenn. Going vertical would give them higher places to perch and sleep but make sure you give them accents that high to do so on. Branches, Snake Plant and tall Bromeliads are the way to go.

As for the wounds, they are going to jump around and bash into things so Neosporin (With NO pain reliever) should be on hand to apply to such. Barometric changes such as big storms coming in seem to change their activity level and cause some funny crazy try to lift the top off conditions. Try to keep the sharp edges to a minimum in their tank because they fall and land in some awkward positions :-)

Jenn, I have the screen type lids and have lined them with nylon type screen material, which will cushion the hits when going for bugs or just jumping around the tank.
