Default Ideas for getting good pictures

Looking at everyones pictures of their frogs is starting to make me jealous. lol I'm wondering the best way to take some better pictures while the frogs are active at night and showing their colors. Do they get startled when using a flash?

My frogs or toads don't even seem to notice when the flash goes off, but most of the time I don't use the flash. I take pics through the glass but also take them out of their tanks for a photo shoot. What ever you are comfortable with.
