I just bought 2 fire bellied toads-they were bought from pet store and they were only 2 in same tank. I bought Fuego first and I decided to get Sissy the next day (I couldn't leave her behind). I've Had them for over 2 weeks and Sissy (the 2nd one) eats like a pig and is a little more friendly. Fuego has NEVER eaten since I've had her. She hasn't lost weight and I've tried feeding her with or without her sister and nothing works. BTW I"m feeding pinhead crickets because I can't find flies...too cold. The temp and humidity is fine and they pretty much stay in their water all day. Fuego's really skittish, but Sissy is too, just not as much. They follow each other around and it seems like they HAVE to be near each other.
I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary except that she just won't eat and I know she sees the crickets. Also, to avoid the cricket from burrowing in the substrate, I take them out and put them in a seperate "feeding" tank that only has crickets. I leave them in for about 10-15 minutes then put them back. My husband thinks maybe that might be doing it-maybe stress? Her vivarium looks identical to her pet store one and it's clean and their water is dechlorinated, etc. I love these guys and don't know what to do. I have 3 other frogs/toads and I've never had a problem. BTW...the FBT are in a separate tank than the others...it's just the FBTs alone. Also, Sissy gets to be a darker green after she soaks quite awhile...is this normal. Fuego is always bright green. Please help!!
I'm no expert and I don't own FBTs but you could try feeding them in their enclosure. The little crickets a lot of the time look for something to hide under rather than burrow in the substrate. Also taking them out involves handling the frogs which causes them stress. Stress can make them not eat. You said they're skiddish so moving them to a feeding enclosure is causing more stress. Try feeding in their enclosure. Have you tried red wigglers? They are a small earth worm max length is usually around 3 in and they aren't very round. If you get some and they're too long just cut pieces off of appropriate size and offer to them. Again I'm no expert and don't own this breed of frog. This is advice that can be applied to most breeds.
